ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS

Scope of Job:
To provide leadership and administration over a comprehensive group of campus life programs and student engagement services that promote academic achievement and educational, social, and cultural opportunities. Oversee multiple departments pertaining, but not limited, to the Dean of Students, Residence Life, Student Union, and University Recreation.

Description of Duties:
  • Provides leadership and oversight for planning, organizing, and coordination to the Dean of Students, Residence Life, Student Union, and University Recreation areas.
  • Establishes and implements short and long-range organizational goals, policies, and procedures while achieving institutional goals and objectives.
  • Monitors and evaluates program and departmental effectiveness and implements changes required for improvement.
  • Provides vision, direction, and strategic planning as well as leadership and development opportunity for departmental staff and management of assigned departments.
  • Manages budget responsibilities and seeks alternative sources to conserve costs and maximize efficiency. Provides leadership over the development and evaluation of policies and regulations pertaining to student affairs, especially those related to alcohol and drug use, student conduct, and Title IX compliance.
  • Oversees the development of a campus culture that complete the student experience and enhance their adjustment to and participation in college life with the specific purpose of increasing student retention, persistence, and graduation rates.
  • Fosters collaboration and creativity to develop efficient uses of services to support the work of all assigned departments and locations.
  • Oversees the development, implementation of campus and community programming, services, and opportunities that meet the varying needs of the UTRGV student population, assists in transforming the UTRGV experience, and fosters school spirit.
  • Promotes a welcoming and accessible vibrant campus culture and works directly with students and student groups to provide support, advocacy, and resources.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Supervision Received:
General supervision from assigned supervisor.

Supervision Given:
General supervision of assigned staff. 

Required Education:
Master’s degree from an accredited University. 

Preferred Education:
Doctorate degree from an accredited University.  

Licenses/Certifications:
None.

Required Experience:
Seven (7) years of experience in higher education professional administration in student affairs related functions. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Experience:
N/A

Equipment:
Use of standard office equipment.
Preferred: Knowledge of Banner or PeopleSoft Campus solutions.

Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Light work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg control requires exertion of forces greater than that of sedentary work and if the worker sits most of the time, the job is considered light work. Indoor office environment. Ability to work weekends and/or evenings as needed; occasional travel is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment
