Job Description: Louisiana State University invites applications for Director of Choral Studies, a position supported by the Edward G. and Catherine M. Galante Chair for Choral Music Education. Appointment will begin in fall 2022. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, having demonstrated exceptional musicianship, teaching, and research and/or creative activity, and leadership in the academic setting. Funding from the endowment will be controlled by the holder, and will provide significant research and instructional support on an annual basis. The Chair will report to the Director of the School of Music, housed within the College of Music and Dramatic Arts.

Responsibilities: Oversee a choral area of five choirs and a robust graduate conducting program, collaborate with one Associate Director, conduct the respected LSU A Cappella Choir, teach relevant courses, advise graduate students, recruit and retain excellent student musicians, participate in faculty governance, and contribute broadly to the academic and artistic milieu of a major, comprehensive School of Music at a flagship, Research I university.

Required qualifications for both levels: A doctorate in choral conducting or equivalent professional experience, a distinguished record as a musician and conductor, a sustained national/international record as a conductor/scholar, knowledge of vocal pedagogy, demonstrated excellence in and commitment to teaching a broad range of students of diverse identities and backgrounds, and commitment to contributing to an academic and artistic community reflective of LSU’s rich regional and national demographics.

Required years of experience for Associate Professor: 6+ years of experience

Required years of experience for Full Professor: 10+ years of experience

Preferred qualifications: Demonstrated leadership in local, regional, national, and/or international choral/music education professional organizations; evidence of dispositions that serve leadership, relationship-building, problem-solving, and opportunity-generating capacities.

The LSU School of Music offers a comprehensive program to nearly 500 music majors. It has 50 full-time faculty, 10 professional staff, and 75 graduate teaching assistants. In addition to the Golden Band from Tigerland and the Turner-Fischer Center for Opera, the School of Music features strong band, orchestra, jazz, vocal, keyboard, and chamber music programs, as well as a robust research component in music education, composition, musicology, and music theory. The School sponsors over 300 recitals, concerts, operas, masterclasses, and lectures each academic year. Degrees offered include the Ph.D. (with concentrations in composition, experimental music and digital media, music education, musicology, and music theory), DMA (concentrations in music performance, collaborative piano, and choral, orchestral, and wind conducting,), MM, BM, BME, and BA (Liberal Arts). LSU also has an innovative and collaborative media arts community; The Center for Computation & Technology (CCT) includes Experimental Music & Digital Media, Digital Media Arts & Engineering, and Digital Arts, offering opportunities to compose for video games, digital animations, and film.

LSU has an enrollment of over 33,000 students. Baton Rouge supports a thriving performing arts scene, including the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra, several dance companies, various eclectic concert series, and a professional theatre company.
