Job Description

The Associate Director for Intercultural Learning and Programs reports to the Director of Cranwell International Center (CIC) and is responsible for providing senior leadership and oversight for all intercultural learning and programmatic initiatives within CIC, seeking to increase the scale, scope, depth, and breadth of CIC’s institutional impact through the ongoing development and implementation of a comprehensive, coordinated, and coherent set of programmatic initiatives that are strategic, sustainable, aligned with ExperienceVT, and designed to support the development of global and intercultural competence in all Virginia Tech students.

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT, IMPLEMENTATION, AND OVERSIGHT (40%)
- Provide senior strategic leadership for all programmatic and intercultural learning initiatives.
- Operationalize and oversee a process for the ongoing development and implementation of a comprehensive, coordinated, and coherent set of programmatic initiatives that are strategic, sustainable, and designed to support the development of global and intercultural competence in all Virginia Tech students.
- Identify a select portfolio of “Signature Programs” and priority initiatives that will focus resources for greatest impact. These programs and initiatives will facilitate meaningful interactions between and among international students and U.S./domestic students; familiarize the broader campus with the international student experience; factor in measurable learning outcomes, particularly those related to global and intercultural competence; feature High-Impact Practices (HIP) when/where appropriate; focus on increasing connection with the campus and community; and foster opportunities for reflection.
- Oversee the timely development and dissemination of the comprehensive annual calendar of all CIC programmatic offerings for each academic year.
- Manage the Cranwell International Center Program Development Grants (https://international.vt.edu/programs/development-grants.html) initiative.
- Ensure Cranwell International Center’s programmatic and intercultural learning initiatives are aligned with and amplified by the ExperienceVT (https://experience.vt.edu) initiative and related frameworks, including but not limited to the Aspirations for Student Learning (https://experience.vt.edu/aspirations.html) and the Gallup Clifton Strengths Assessment (https://experience.vt.edu/strengths.html).
- Assist with the development and implementation of special programs such as the China Pre-Departure Orientation (https://international.vt.edu/programs/ChinaPreDepartureOrientation.html), the German Fulbright Summer Institute (https://international.vt.edu/programs/GFSI.html), and other programs as determined by the Director.

GLOBAL AND INTERCULTURAL COMPETENCE TRAINING AND ASSESSMENT (40%)
- Promote the comprehensive internationalization of the university and the development of global and intercultural competence to a wide range of administrative and academic partners to expand CIC’s reach and impact.
- Develop and deliver a wide range of standing and on-demand workshops for students, faculty, and staff regarding the development and assessment of global and intercultural competence through utilization of instruments such as the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), the Intercultural Conflict Style Inventory (ICS), and/or the Global Competence Aptitude Assessment (GCAA).

GENERAL ADMINISTRATION, MANAGEMENT, AND SUPERVISION (20%)
- Serve on the Cranwell International Center (CIC) senior leadership team, providing strategic direction and oversight for all aspects of international programs (budget, human resources, planning, etc.).
- Secure internal and external grants to support CIC’s programmatic and intercultural learning initiatives.
- Represent CIC on various university committees.
- Serve as departmental assessment lead.
- Supervise up to three Assistant Directors as direct-reports.

Required Qualifications

The selected individual must be a seasoned educator with an unrelenting commitment to student success, learning, and diversity | Master's degree in intercultural communication, language education, international affairs, counseling, student affairs, higher education administration, or related field | Knowledge of best practices for student programming and assessment | Knowledge, experience, and/or certification with at least one of the following inventories or a similar inventory or assessment instrument: Global Perspectives Inventory, Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), Intercultural Conflict Style Inventory (ICS), Global Competencies Inventory, and/or Global Competence Aptitude Assessment (GCAA) | Demonstrated experience in the design, development, implementation, and assessment of intercultural learning and programs | Demonstrated experience facilitating, presenting, and/or delivering training | Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population | Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills | Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively | Budgetary experience | Supervisory experience

Preferred Qualifications

PhD or EdD | Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, and/or providing ongoing leadership for a Living-Learning Program (LLP), particularly a program with a global and/or intercultural theme/focus | Knowledge, experience, and/or certification with the Gallup CliftonStrengths assessment | Fluency in a foreign language | Study or work abroad | Experience collaborating with student affairs and academic affairs departments

Additional Information

The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check as well as documentation of COVID-19 vaccination or receive approval from the university for a vaccination exemption due to a medical condition or sincerely held religious belief.
