Postdoctoral Associate - ELSI/Ethics & Policy Research - Forensic Use of DNA

Summary

The Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy at Baylor College of Medicine is hiring a full-time postdoctoral researcher with strong empirical skills to work on NIH-funded research examining ethical, legal, and social issues at the intersection of data sharing and privacy (including the use of genetic genealogy databases to solve crimes, the psychosocial and relational impacts of discovering new genetic relatives through direct-to-consumer genetic testing, and policy issues related to sharing genomic, neural activity, and health data to advance research and improve care). This is a non-laboratory research position.

The postdoctoral researcher will be part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers led by Amy McGuire, JD, PhD, and Christi Guerrini, JD, MPH. In addition to the primary duties and responsibilities related to their work on funded research projects, postdoctoral researchers will receive mentoring to assist with publishing manuscripts and presenting research at academic conferences. Qualified candidates may receive additional mentorship to submit their own external training grant application. The Center regularly hosts journal clubs, career development information sessions, and professional development events, including in-services on grant writing, academic presentations, and goal planning. The Center promotes an intellectually stimulating and collaborative environment conducive to academic excellence.

The Center for Medical Ethics & Health Policy has 18 primary faculty members, 34 secondary faculty, 24 scholars, and over 40 fellows and staff, housed on the main Baylor campus in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas.

Our Center's faculty teach in the undergraduate and graduate medical education curricula, direct an award-winning ethics pathway and newly developed health policy pathway for advanced medical students, and have developed a comprehensive College-wide graduate medical education curriculum in ethics, professionalism, and health policy. Center faculty are actively engaged in funded research supported by the NIH, PCORI, and private foundations. Our faculty publish high-impact papers in the peer-reviewed scientific, clinical, and bioethics literature and have authored and edited several seminal books in bioethics. Finally, our faculty direct clinical ethics programs at affiliated hospitals in the Texas Medical Center, that conduct over 600 clinical ethics consultations per year.

Job Duties

• Assist with instrument development (interview/focus group guides, survey experiments, and Delphi materials) and data collection.
• Conduct interviews/focus groups and participate in qualitative data analysis.
• Help organize modified policy Delphi process, including developing materials and analyzing data to develop policy options and best practices.
• Lead and assist with publishing research findings as manuscripts for relevant academic journals.
• Present project findings at local, national, and international meetings.

Minimum Qualifications

• Doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, MD, JD) in humanities, law, social sciences, health policy, public health, or related field.
• No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with qualitative data collection and analysis preferred; experience with qualitative data analysis programs preferred (e.g., Dedoose, nVivo).
• Experience with quantitative data analysis preferred.
• Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills required; must be able to work independently and collaboratively to meet deadlines.
• Track record of publications in scientific and/or medical journals preferred.
• Strong interest in bioethics, health policy, genomics and/or related legal issues.
• Experience with ethical issues in genomics preferred.
