Job Summary

The Laboratory Machinist produces machined parts by programming, building, and operating a computer numerical control (CNC) machine and other machining tools; maintaining quality and safety standards; instructing staff and students; maintaining equipment and a neat and clean working environment.

Essential Functions
  • Ensure that all faculty, staff, and students comply with all laboratory rules and regulations, including health and safety policies guaranteeing the highest quality of results and providing training to ensure compliance
  • Assist staff and students by providing lab instructions or procedural guidance. Must be able to anticipate potential problems and help students resolve them as they occur to keep projects on schedule
  • Design and build equipment or systems needed for undergraduate and research laboratories.
  • Ability to work from drawings or verbal instructions with minimal instruction
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment, provide timely and prompt turn around for projects and tasks, use excellent judgment when problem solving and bring innovative solutions
  • Plan machining by studying blueprints, engineering plans, verbal instructions, materials, specifications, orthographic drawings, reference planes, locations of surfaces, and machining parameters; interpreting geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T)
  • Set-up and program mills and lathes by installing and adjusting three-and four-jaw chucks, tools, attachments, collets, bushings, came, gears, stops, and stock pushers; indicating vices; tramming heads
  • Design or assist in the design of complex machine parts, fixtures, test, specimens, and experimental apparatus
  • Perform welding, brazing, and soldering tasks in conjunction with machine repairs or laboratory apparatus construction
  • Interact with other laboratory personnel at the technical level required to correct, improve, or otherwise modify existing or new designs
  • Supervise students working in the machine shop. Assist and demonstrate use of equipment to students and others
  • Set goals each year in compliance with the yearly performance evaluation process.
  • Perform daily and weekly maintenance
  • Program CNC mills and lathes by entering instructions, including zero and reference points; setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches; calculating requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry; proving part programs
  • Provide care, maintenance, and repairs on CNC systems
  • Train others in the programming and use of the CNC machines
  • Design or assist in transferring the design coding of complex machine parts, fixtures, test, specimens, and experimental apparatus into the CNC machine
Required Qualifications
  • HS Diploma or GED
  • Minimum 5 years related/relevant experience
  • Have working knowledge of CA-CAM programs / BOB-CAD or PRO-E or AUTO-CAD a plus
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Completed training at a technical or vocation school
  • Program and set-up Hass mill and lathe without guidance
  • Have knowledge of all machining aspects Manual and C.N.C.
  • Have working knowledge of insert tooling
  • Possess good communication skills and work as a team player
