Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The division for University Advancement responds to the needs of a variety of external and internal constituents in achieving its primary goals to: 1) Increase private financial support for prioritized university programs and activities, and 2) Improve external relations for the university through effective board management and donor stewardship. The division strives to raise funds, as outlined by the Chancellor’s vision statement and strategic plan, from the private sector to further the university mission of pursuing the resources that will enable our faculty and students to excel, and becoming intensely regionally engaged. In doing so, the division plans strategically to facilitate the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of all constituencies, and seeks to positively promote the university. The division’s fundraising efforts are enhanced by effective partnerships with components of the campus community as well as external audiences including alumni, parents, corporations, foundations, legislators, volunteer board members and friends. Development areas include major gifts, planned giving, corporate and foundation relations, annual giving, and alumni relations. Prospect management and research, advancement services and advancement events and boards, stewardship and advancement communications are support services for the fundraising activities of the division.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The UNCW Alumni Association is a powerful network of nearly 100,000 graduates. With over 50,000 alumni gifts secured thus far as part of Like No Other: The Campaign for UNCW – the university is actively recruiting for an assistant director of alumni engagement who is eager to build upon this momentum and rally alumni in support for a university on the rise.

The Assistant Director of Alumni Relations-Geographic Programming & Engagement (assistant director, herein) manages the UNCW Alumni Association’s geographic affiliated activity to include four chartered chapters within North Carolina and three, active out-of-state committees. This role manages over 150 alumni leaders with a goal of deepening connections between graduates and their alma mater through volunteerism, communications, experiences and giving. Informed by feedback from a recent alumni image study, the successful candidate will have an opportunity to design new programs and implement innovative strategies that accomplish these goals.

Volunteer responsibilities include, but are not limited to, personal communication, guidance, ongoing training, support, discovery, and recruitment of volunteers. The assistant director is also responsible for the planning and facilitation of alumni chapter meetings and programs to include marketing and events with support from volunteers and colleagues within the Division for University Advancement. In consultation with the director, the assistant director must be able to track return on investment to guide programming decisions as well as track important alumni interactions in the university’s constituent database.

In addition to overseeing established alumni networks, the assistant director will aid in the discovery and cultivation of alumni donor prospects throughout the country. It is anticipated that this role will also establish strong working relationships with members of the campus community for institutional awareness and effective collaborations.

The assistant director of alumni relations serves as a member of and a partner in achieving the Division for University Advancement’s strategic goals to include increasing alumni giving. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred education, professional skills and experience

The following education, knowledge, skills and experience are strongly desired:
  • Master’s degree
  • Three or more years of experience in higher education, alumni relations, development, public relations or related fields
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish rapport with alumni of diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to track return on investment to shape future programming
  • Familiarity with UNCW
  • Experience in event planning
  • Experience in volunteer management
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize
  • Willingness to travel extensively and occasionally work unconventional nights and weekends
  • Ability to be an effective and diplomatic collaborator
  • Ability to conceptualize and facilitate new ideas and programs
  • Knowledge of customer relationship management software
  • Experience with Blackbaud products
