The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM) is seeking to hire a qualified individual for the position of Vice Chair for Research. The primary responsibility of the Vice Chair for Research is to oversee the complex research mission of the Department, including the coordination of faculty, staff and trainees involved in that mission. This oversight includes research initiatives across the spectrum of activities related to health services, health disparities, and outcomes based research.  To accomplish these goals, the Vice Chair coordinates the varied research activities of the Department and ensures that the Department conducts the best research possible for learners of all levels. The efforts are directed at, but not limited to:

 

  1. Lead and develop the DFCM research portfolio with our department leaders and key stakeholders
    1. Working with DFCM and with UAB School of Medicine (SOM) leaders, the VCR will have knowledge of and strategize to enhance research programs that exist, are planned, and for which external sources (e.g., NIH, PCORI, HRSA) will offer in the future. This will include identifying opportunities, targeting opportunities to individual faculty, and assuring that high-priority applications are submitted. The VCR will benefit from the existing DFCM infrastructure in these efforts.
    2. Working with DFCM leadership and Research Office staff, the VCR will be familiar with and further develop relevant metrics to track and influence the research portfolio.
  2. Oversee and grow research commitments to faculty in conjunction with department leadership
  3. Growth of DFCM investigator pipeline
    1. Working with DFCM leadership, ensure adequate mentoring of junior investigators.
    2. Actively contribute to the recruitment and vetting of potential new research faculty hires.
  4. Interact with research leaders from other Departments, the SOM Dean’s Office, UAB research centers, and the UAB VPR’s Office.
    1. Identify DFCM-relevant UAB research centers and consider periodic meetings with their directors to identify synergies with DFCM-based research efforts.
    2. Identify DFCM-relevant non-SOM research departments and entities and consider periodic meetings with their leaders to identify synergies with DFCM-based research efforts.

 

Consideration will be given to board-certified MD/DO or PhD for a full-time position. Position is a twelve-month, open rank, open tenure faculty position. Salary and rank commensurate with experience and qualifications.  Experience as a residency or fellowship program director preferred.
