- Possesses an earned doctorate or other appropriate terminal degrees from an accredited institution related to an applied focus within the broad areas of health science, social sciences, humanities, community development, and/or other related fields.
- Provides a sufficient academic record to be granted the rank of full professor and tenure in the College of Arts and Sciences.
- Demonstrates effective leadership within the academy and/or other non-profit organizations or government organizations.
- Exhibits excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrates ample familiarity and experience with both online and face-to-face curriculum development.
- Shares a commitment to inclusive excellence, student mentorship, and faculty collaborations.
- Provides evidence of one's ability to work collaboratively within the university and its programs, and among community partners.

None Description of the Department or Unit
The Department of Rural Resilience and Innovation (RR&I), the newest department in the College of Arts and Sciences at Appalachian State University, will serve as a hub for those working on scholarship, teaching and service with rural community partners. The new chair will develop a foundation for the department that allows for community-based partnerships, high impact practices for students, and applied scholarship. The department's focus will be on four major areas: rural health and wellness, sustainability (broadly-defined), rural-urban interdependence, and community-engaged scholarship and practices. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Establish policies and procedures necessary for governance of the new department and affiliated faculty and staff.
- Develop program curricula and degree/certificate programs relevant to the department's mission utilizing existing University expertise.
- Pursue additional resources (e.g., external funding) to incentivize participation in the department and grow capacity in research, teaching, and community collaboration.
- Facilitate the coordination of multidisciplinary projects related to the three focus areas with faculty across the University.
- Grow the public profile of the department locally and regionally.
- Supervise a part-time department administrative assistant and affiliated faculty members.
- Support and manage personnel related to the department's mission.
- Other duties and responsibilities associated with chair service as explained in the University's Faculty Handbook , Section 2.8, pages 21-22.
- Direct college engagement activities and online degree pathways in consultation with the Dean, including the college's Bachelor of Science online degree program, Veterinary Technology.
