Position Function:

The Department of Biological Sciences at Mississippi State University has multiple Instructor positions available. Instructors are teaching-specific roles with no direct research responsibility. These are promotable positions with ranks of Instructor I, II and III, dependent on experience and effectiveness. All instructor levels are full-time, 9-month, non-tenure track positions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Teaching opportunities are wide-ranging throughout our curriculum and include non-majors courses in Animal Biology and Anatomy & Physiology as well as courses for our introductory Biology sequence for majors, and other more advanced majors courses including Animal Diversity, Human Anatomy, Vertebrate Histology, Comparative Anatomy, General Microbiology, Pathogenic Microbiology, Parasitology, Bacterial Physiology, or other courses fitting the applicant’s interest and the department’s need. Duties may include courses that have online components or are offered entirely online although the expectations are that these positions will be predominantly in face-to-face delivery formats. These assignments may also include preparing, coordinating, and supervising lab sections with the support of graduate teaching assistants. The opportunity to teach summer courses for additional pay may be available to meet student demand.

Minimum Qualifications:

M.S. degree in a relevant discipline, instructional experience at the university or community college level, excellent communication and organizational skills, and familiarity with common instructional technologies. Candidates with degrees pending will be considered if the expected completion date is before the position’s start date. Preference will be given to candidates who use evidence-based teaching practices, have instructional design experience, are committed to creating a safe and inclusive learning environment, have taught a variety of courses, have experience coordinating teaching laboratories, and demonstrate excellence in teaching.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D. in a relevant discipline, a minimum of one-year instructional experience, and experience coordinating teaching laboratories.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; strong organizational and computer skills.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

No unusual physical requirements. Requires no heavy lifting, and nearly all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility.
