Professor and Department Head, Food Science and Human Nutrition

The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition seeks a Department Head to fill a vacancy due to retirement. Description of Work Unit:

The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition has 32 faculty and adjunct members and 23 research associates and administrative staff, ~600 undergraduate students and offers undergraduate degrees in Nutrition and Food Science, Hospitality Management, and Fermentation Science and Technology. The department also offers MS and PhD degrees in Nutrition Science, Community Nutrition, and Food Science and Safety and currently has ~75 graduate students. Department research is supported by federal grants from the NIH, USDA, foundations, industry and two endowments that support a faculty chair and the Lillian Fountain-Smith Nutrition Conference hosted by the department. Research has focused on childhood obesity, community nutrition among limited resource audiences, molecular and metabolic nutrition targeted at chronic disease prevention, functional foods, bioactive food components, and food safety. The department’s Extension faculty are responsible for numerous creative, high impact educational and engagement programs throughout the state, including EFNEP. A MPH program focus area in Public Health Nutrition within the School of Public Health provides new collaborative opportunities. The department offers an accredited B.S. dietetics program and an M.S. coordinated dietetic internship program. With the overall growth in the department, faculty and student diversity has increased. College
The Department is housed within the College of Health and Human Sciences, which is comprised of 8 academic units: the Departments of Construction Management, Design and Merchandising, Food Science and Human Nutrition, Health and Exercise Science, Human Development and Family Studies, Occupational Therapy, and the Schools of Education and Social Work. Total undergraduate and graduate enrollment is over 5,000 students, with 125 tenure-track and 60 full-time non-tenure track faculty members. Several of the College’s academic programs are nationally recognized or ranked, including the Didactic Program in Dietetics Management and the Coordinated Master’s Program in Dietetics. The College of Health and Human Sciences houses 20 different Institutes, Centers, Special Units, and Extension offices, designed to provide a broad range of research and outreach activities that support social, economic and community development in Colorado, the nation, and the world.

The Professor and Head of the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition position in the College of Health and Human Sciences is a 12-month, full-time faculty position. Position Supervises 50 faculty and staff

Required Qualifications:

• Earned Doctorate in Food Science and/or Human Nutrition or a related field (e.g. Public Health, Exercise Science, Physiology, Fermentation Science, Hospitality Management);
• Academic credentials commensurate with a faculty appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure;
• Demonstrated record of extramurally funded research;
• Demonstrated record of teaching and mentoring excellence;
• Demonstrated record of administrative, personnel management, and leadership experience;
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as demonstrated by experience with program development, participation in programs or professional development focused on diversity, equity and/or inclusion, and/or accountability for diversity outcomes assessment.

 Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience as department head, associate dean, or academic program director;
• Demonstrated commitment to maximize faculty, staff, and student professional growth and potential;
• Experience leading the tenure and promotion process;
• Experience with program assessment or accreditation/re-accreditation processes;
• Demonstrated record of effective fundraising and donor relation experience;
• Demonstrated ability to facilitate open and collaborative relationships within and external to (e.g industry partners) the unit;
• Experience with, or strong familiarity of, Extension in relation to a land-grant institution(s).
