The Department of Art at the University of Memphis invites applications for The Dorothy Kayser Hohenberg Chair of Excellence in Art History. We are hiring visiting professors for the academic years of 2022-2023, 2023-2024, and 2024-2025. We welcome a broad range of applicants from areas including but not limited to American art history and visual culture; the arts of Ancient Greece and Rome; European art studies from medieval to contemporary; Egyptology and Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Africa-African Diaspora art histories; and Museum Studies. The College of Communication and Fine Arts statement regarding position advertisements reads, ‘The accomplishments of candidates for this position must reflect their commitment to working with an inclusive student population, and their ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural academic goals of the university.’ Responsibilities include teaching one course per semester in the visitor’s area of expertise and presenting a formal lecture to the greater Memphis community in the spring semester of their residency. We encourage visiting scholars to pursue a research goal while in residence and to present their current research to our students in uniquely designed ‘special topics’ courses or in seminars. In addition to a competitive salary and benefits, a travel budget for research and conference attendance, book allowance, and a graduate assistant are also provided.
