Job Description
The UMKC University Libraries are seeking a collaborative, team-oriented individual to fill the role of University Archivist, responsible for planning, building, and stewarding collections documenting the history of the University of Missouri-Kansas City. The University Archivist provides leadership and expertise in archives and records administration, access to University records and archives in all formats, and research support. The University Archivist is committed to user-centered collections and services that reflect diverse constituents and works collaboratively with the Associate Dean of Special Collections and Archives as well as campus constituencies to develop strategic directions and assess service quality in these areas. This position is a 12-month non-tenure track, ranked benefit-eligible faculty librarian appointment and reports to the Associate Dean of Special Collections and Archives.
Primary duties and responsibilities include:
- Plans, develops, and manages the University Archives program
within the academic research library setting.
- Partners with other academic and administrative units on campus
to collect the official and legal records, documents,
correspondence, artwork, and media of the University and advises on
University records retention policies and procedures to ensure
compliance to the University of Missouri (UM) System
guidelines.
- Collects contemporary content using a strategic and creative
approach to actively incorporate records reflecting a diverse
campus life.
- Collaborates with UM System Records Management in the
management of University records, and University Archives
departments across the system to address common issues and develop
shared strategies as necessary.
- Provides in-depth face-to-face, telephone, and electronic
reference service for users of University Archives.
- Ensures that the University records are available for use by
other units on campus for promotion, marketing, dispute resolution,
grievance resolution, legal action, research, and other essential
proceedings.
- Collaborates with the Head of LaBudde Special Collections to
accession, arrange, describe, preserve, and store archival
collections in physical and digital formats both locally and
remotely.
- Manages timely courier transport of offsite materials requested
by researchers.
- Initiates or provides library instruction to support the UMKC
curriculum, ensuring that students develop adequate library and
information skills specific to University Archives resources.
- Assembles, analyzes, and shares appropriate quantitative and
qualitative data about all aspects of the position
responsibilities, and provides regular reports on activities,
problems, challenges, and accomplishments.
- May supervise, hire, evaluate, and train student assistants as
necessary to ensure smooth operations that follow established
policies.
- ALA accredited MLS or a graduate degree in an appropriate discipline (history, archival management, or related area);
- Successful experience in an archives or special collections setting with demonstrated knowledge of core functions and services, including appraisal and selection, description and preservation, records management, reference, and public services;
- Evidence of ability to build and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with a diverse faculty, staff, researchers, visiting scholars, alumni, and student population;
- Awareness of current trends in born-digital curation;
- Demonstrated commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion;
- Potential to meet promotion requirements in non-tenure track appointment, evidenced through service, research, leadership, innovation, and/or professional development.
This is a full-time, 12 month, ranked, non-tenure track, benefit-eligible faculty position.
Salary
This is a 12 month, ranked, non-tenure track faculty position. (See the Promotion and Appointments Criteria for rank specifications.) The minimum salaries for ranks are: Librarian I $48,500, Librarian II $51,000, Librarian III $56,000, and Librarian IV $63,500. Please note that these are minimum salaries, not ranges. Salaries are negotiable and commensurate with experience ( University of Missouri Salary Report ). UMKC offers an excellent retirement/benefits package.

The UMKC University Libraries’ Special Collections & Archives (SCA) division consists of LaBudde Special Collections, Marr Sound Archives, University Archives, Cataloging & Metadata Management, and Digital Projects.
