Hiring Department

College of Arts & Sciences, Department of Arts & Art History

Job Description

The Department of Art and Art History at the University of Missouri-Kansas City is conducting a search for an Assistant Professor, full-time, benefit-eligible 9-month tenure track position, in graphic design. Specifically, we are seeking applications from candidates who possess an understanding of the critical, historical and theoretical aspects of graphic design as well as an engagement in evolving practices in the field. The ideal candidate will be able to apply this understanding to areas such as logo design, print layout, web design, motion graphics, or wayfinding, as well as emergent technologies for graphic designers, as demonstrated by their creative portfolio. The candidate should be especially insightful to the ways in which these areas can enhance community and culture through storytelling.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an exceptional approach to their own creative research, developing and maintaining a national and international reputation through projects, writings, lectures, and other creative outlets. The selected candidate will also have a fundamental role in shaping the future of studio art and graphic design at UMKC and its relationship to the university, and the local/global design community. They will also have an important role in mentoring underserved students. They will be expected to participate in developing a new curriculum around contemporary design and digital media, and to lead client-based experiential learning through the Egghead Advertising Agency.

The Department of Art and Art History programs provide students with tools to develop creative and critical thinking skills, visual and verbal communication abilities and versatility in professional and personal situations. We serve a variety of students from non-majors to the professionally oriented with minors and BA in studio art along with additional BA and MA degrees in art history. Our faculty includes accomplished and nationally exhibiting artists, as well as dedicated and actively publishing art historians. The department’s own UMKC Gallery of Art, visiting artists and scholars and gallery exhibitions supplement coursework and provide unique interactive learning opportunities outside of the classroom. We engage students in high-impact learning trips such at local artists’ studios and active art hubs across the country. Physical proximity and professional connections to museums, studios and organizations in Kansas City offer students additional opportunities for internships, access to visiting artists and enrichment programs to enhance their education.
