Job Description

The School of Education at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) announces adjunct and adjunct university supervisor faculty positions in Urban Teacher Education for the Institute for Urban Education (IUE). The professionals selected for this position will join a collaborative and dedicated faculty who emphasize excellence in education at all levels in the context of the School of Education’s commitment to urban education, social justice and educational equity. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The IUE prepares and supports exemplary teachers for richly diverse schools in Kansas City. Components of the IUE include Grow Your Own high school and community college pipelines for prospective teachers, Teacher Preparation for urban school, and Services to Schools and Teachers which includes professional development and teacher support.

Major Responsibilities May Include:

• Teaching or assisting in teaching courses in initial teacher certification

• Teaching or assisting in teaching courses high school Grow Your Own teacher pipeline programs

• Supervise and observe preservice teachers in their field, community service and/or clinical experience(s)

• Assess candidate performance during field and/or clinical experience(s)

• Serve as a liaison between the university and practicum site while promoting and sustaining positive relationships with the Cooperating Mentor Teacher(s), teacher candidates, principal and university faculty

• Serve as a liaison between high school Grow Your Own programs and the IUE

• Assisting with mentorship of current and/or prospective IUE students, including responding to questions about the teaching profession and assistance with applications

• Assist with ACT and/or Missouri General Assessment Exam preparation

• Respond to email, phone calls, questions and other inquiries in a timely manner

• Facilitate and/or participate in IUE Urban Education Seminars

• Provide professional development and mentorship to beginning teachers

• Participate in regularly scheduled university supervisor, program and/or adjunct faculty meetings

• Demonstrate and reflect knowledge of effective instructional practices for diverse classrooms

• Maintain individual candidate documentation and confidentiality

• Travel significantly in the metro Kansas City region

• Communicates clearly in a timely manner issues and/or concerns regarding IUE candidate performance to the IUE Director and/or Associate Director

• Demonstrate knowledge, skills and dispositions that clearly align with the School of Education mission, vision and values

Minimum Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field

  • At least five years of successful PK-12 public school experience as a classroom teacher or equivalent in an urban setting

  • Current or prior teacher certification in the United States

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Competence in use of technology such as Canvas and online repositories

  • Demonstrated experience and ability to work well with individuals with diverse backgrounds

  • Demonstrated commitment to educational equity

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, anti-racism, and social justice

  • Demonstrated familiarity and knowledge of Kansas City and its schools

  • Demonstrated ability to mentor teachers.

  • Valid driver’s license and access to transportation required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 5 or more years teaching experience in Kansas City urban schools

  • 1 or more years of experience mentoring pre-service and/or beginning teachers

  • 1 or years of experience with adult learning and/or demonstrated teacher leadership

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office Suite and database management

  • Bilingual preferred, but not required (English/Spanish)
