The Department of Public Affairs of the Henry W. Bloch School of Management at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) is pleased to invite applications and nominations for a senior faculty position. This is a 9-month, benefit eligible, tenured Endowed Chair position, with appointment possible at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. We seek a nationally recognized scholar with expertise in areas related to urban affairs, nonprofit management, public administration and/or public policy. We are seeking individuals who do work at the intersection of urban affairs and nonprofit management as well as those with expertise in areas such as performance management, e-governance, community development, social entrepreneurship, and/or public data analytics. We are particularly interested in candidates who are adept at teaching a diverse undergraduate and graduate student body, in particular those from historically marginalized backgrounds. Candidates should have an earned doctorate degree in public administration or a relevant discipline (e.g., public policy, nonprofit management, economics, urban planning, urban geography, sociology, political science). The desired start date is Fall 2022.

Responsibilities:

  1. Scholarly research at the leading edge of the field with productivity consistent with developing or maintaining a national reputation.
  2. Using traditional and online modalities, teach courses in areas related to urban affairs, public administration, public policy, and nonprofit management in the Master of Public Administration (MPA) program as well as related graduate and undergraduate programs.
  3. Support of the school’s mission through internal and external service including community engagement
  4. The promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion through research, teaching, and service.


The Department of Public Affairs offers an MPA accredited by the Network of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA), participates in UMKC’s interdisciplinary Ph.D. program, and is known for its commitment to scholarship, teaching, and outreach in public administration. The MPA program includes emphasis options in Nonprofit Management, Urban Policy and Management, and Health Services Administration. The department also contributes courses to the BBA (Nonprofit Management and Health Administration emphasis areas), Professional MBA, and EMBA programs at the Bloch School.

Minimum Qualifications

P hD in public administration or a related discipline; evidence of teaching effectiveness; Scholarly record that includes publications in highly respected outlets; commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
