Job Details

  • Lead the university’s efforts to prepare students through the ongoing integration of students’ career development into curricular and co-curricular efforts. Develop and implement a comprehensive Career Services program that focuses on career decision making, career readiness, student employment, experiential learning, and connecting students with opportunities. Manage the Office of Career Services and supervise staff.

    Essential Functions:

    TRAINING & PROGRAM MANAGEMENT

  • Develop and deliver a comprehensive Career Services program plan for the university.
  • Provide in-class, video and/or online, career management presentations including career visioning, resumes and cover letters, networking, interviewing, social media, and offer evaluations and other specialized topics.
  • Partner with faculty on the delivery of sessions to integrate career preparation in classroom learning.
  • Partner with student affairs and support groups to offer career readiness programming to students.
  • Represent Career Services at student and parent orientation sessions for all incoming and prospective freshmen, transfer, and graduate students.
  • Manage the Federal Work Study program to oversee student placement and ensure that funds are used appropriately and to maximum level.
  • Coordinate student employment for the university including training, orientation, recruitment, and hiring; manage student employee discipline and grievance processes.


EMPLOYER RELATIONS

  • Develop and manage relationships with employers.
  • Interact with corporate recruiters and company representatives to field employer requests and garner ongoing involvement and support for career opportunities and educational programming.
  • Provide expertise on industry trends and functional expectations.
  • Foster faculty and department chairs relations with employers regarding job opportunities and events.
  • Develop workshops and events that target student populations interested in specific careers to interact with industry employers.
  • Coordinate with alumni relations on programming and events that provide students with alumni/industry connections and help them develop greater awareness of career paths.
  • Plan and coordinate career fairs and other career-related events as appropriate.


Marketing & Data Collection

  • Develop, implement, and analyze the annual graduation survey to assess post-graduation outcomes of students; provide comprehensive reports for the university on student outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the marketing department to develop a comprehensive approach for marketing the university, students and alumni to employers; develop marketing materials for use during admissions events and employer meetings.
  • Develop and implement marketing resources to increase student participation in career programming.
  • Enhance the university’s reputation through participation in professional organizations and serving as a field expert for news media.


CAREER COUNSELING & COACHING

  • Meet with students individually to assess their readiness to effectively launch and manage their job search and/or career advancement process.
  • Identify, secure and implement electronic resources to support students’ career development.
  • Provide comprehensive resume and interview feedback through resume critiques and mock interviews.
  • Lead the development of online resources for students, including the Career Services website, Blackboard organization and career handbook.


ADMINISTRATION

  • Support electronic internship approval process in conjunction with program-specific internship coordinators, including automated feedback solicitation from employers.
  • Manage the office staff for effective and efficient delivery of unit goals, student learning goals, and key performance indicators for the strategic compass (strategic plan) and mission.
  • Efficiently manage university resources and budgets; collaborate with IT to identify and implement technology resources to enhance services to students.
  • Manage student employment systems and records complying with federal and state regulations around employment.
  • Participate in divisional and university leadership processes, including President’s Leadership Council and Provost Council.
  • Deliver presentations to key stakeholders of the university as needed.
  • Attend and participate in university events, including Open House and New Student Orientation.
  • Integrate the Mercy core values in all aspects of interaction with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Other administrative duties as assigned.


Miscellaneous/secondary responsibilities:

  • Serve on university-wide committees and taskforces as requested.
  • Support the university at events, including Commencement, Convocation, Critical Concerns Week, and Mercy Week.


Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree required in Business, Counseling, Education, Human Resources, Student Affairs, or a related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of full-time professional experience in higher education, student services, or a related field; three or more years of supervisory experience required.
  • Experience in administering grants, budget management, assessment, and supervision of personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance program development and interaction with students.
  • Competence in managing financial resources; program design and implementation; familiarity with institutional research processes, design, completion, and assessment of student outcomes and program evaluations.
  • Ability to provide individual and group career coaching and relevant career readiness workshops.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office, Internet, e-mail, database application management, etc.).
  • Ability to prioritize work, manage multiple tasks, perform well under pressure, meet deadlines, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to effectively supervise and lead a staff of professionals.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a team.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, some evenings and weekends required.
