Title: Associate Director of Advancement Communications





Position Purpose:

The Office of College Advancement, with counsel and support from the Board of Trustees, the Alumni Council, Bates Fund Executive Committee, and other key volunteers, develops a cohesive strategic plan for alumni engagement, fundraising, and marketing — one which is inclusive, thoughtful, innovative, and resourceful, and which strengthens the bonds between constituents and the college. Engaged alumni are essential to the continued health and financial well-being of the college.

The associate director will support the college’s engagement and fundraising priorities by consulting and collaborating with Advancement colleagues, primarily the Assistant Vice President of Alumni Engagement and the Director of Annual Giving, to develop comprehensive and cohesive strategies for alumni communications, while also ensuring seamless integration with other advancement marketing efforts and communications.

The associate director will ensure that Alumni Engagement and Annual Giving communications maintain overarching college brand identity, reflect inclusion through language, and adhere to strategy. This position acts as a project manager with keen attention to detail regarding timelines, revision processes, and adherence to deadlines for Advancement communications.

Job Duties:
  • Collaborate with Alumni Engagement colleagues to create a comprehensive and cohesive strategy for alumni communications; consult with Annual Giving and other colleagues/teams within the department to execute strong marking pieces.
  • Consult with advancement team managers as they create and produce email and direct mail communications, from draft through distribution of final product, for alumni and parent audiences. Types of media/projects include newsletters and letters (primarily electronic), website content, award citations, donor profiles, invitations, stewardship messages, targeted short-term online giving campaigns and challenges, and ads.
  • Ensure error-free content and successful completion of marketing projects by coordinating data pulls, managing production schedules and calendar, and tracking costs and expenditures.
  • Manage scheduling, copywriting, editing, and layout for Alumni Engagement communications. Design and edit content for inclusivity, readability and UX.
  • Managerial responsibilities for the Assistant Director of Digital Engagement, providing guidance, direction, and development of strategy for social media and virtual engagement.
  • Web content creator and strategist (Wordpress).
  • Help review outside vendors and products relating to social media management, crowd-funding, giving pages, CRM, volunteer engagement tools, and website platforms for a timely and robust online presence/experience.
  • Research trends and best practices relating to solicitation, marketing, and social media.
  • Analyze web traffic metrics and suggest solutions to boost web presence; provide data insights for engagement and fundraising communications.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice President

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

● Bachelor’s degree required.

Experience

● Demonstrated success in the production of effective communications and marketing is required.
● Understanding of database systems, business office software, web tools, email marketing, and reporting software.
● Demonstrated track record of progressive achievement in Advancement, communications, or marketing/sales.
● Possesses a substantial record of successful collaboration with multiple constituencies, including colleagues and external constituents.

Skills and Knowledge

● Personal commitment to excellence and the mission of a top-tier small liberal arts college.
