Job Description:

The Department of History, Political Science, and Philosophy of Longwood University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in African American History (F0285) to begin in August 2022. In keeping with the university mission to prepare citizen leaders, the Longwood history program has a strong tradition of preparing students to pursue careers in teaching and in public history, particularly within the Commonwealth of Virginia. Following on the report of the Virginia Commission on African American History Education in the Commonwealth, the department seeks to expand its long-standing commitment to teaching African American history.  

The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in African American history, as well as contribute to the department’s upper-level course offerings in post-1865 American history. In addition the successful candidate will teach sections of our two-part American History survey, which is part of Longwood’s distinctive Civitae Core Curriculum. The successful candidate would also have opportunities to contribute to Longwood’s partnership with the Moton Museum and to a new minor in Race and Ethnic Studies. An active research agenda, including working with undergraduate students, is expected.

In addition to the primary responsibility of in person teaching, faculty are also expected to advise students effectively, to make service contributions, and to engage in scholarship and professional activity, including undergraduate research. 

Requirements:

A completed Ph.D. in United States or African American History is required. Well-qualified ABD candidates will be considered but must be on track to have all degree requirements completed by August 2022. Ability to contribute to department offerings in post-1865 United States history preferred. Ability to support the concentrations in Teacher Preparation in History and Social Science or in Public History preferred. A demonstrated ability and commitment to working with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and constituents in support of the university mission is required.

This is a full-time, tenure-track, instructional faculty position.  Salary will be commensurate with credentials and experience.  Commonwealth of Virginia benefits accompany this position.  A successful criminal background investigation is required.  AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, and other national service alumni are encouraged to apply.
