Degree and area of specialization:

Candidates are required to have an earned doctorate in economics of education, economics, public policy, or related fields. Candidates should possess an interest in joining a diverse, multidisciplinary department dedicated to the study of educational history, policy, practice, and equity in its various manifestations, locally and globally.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

We seek a scholar with the potential for excellence in research, teaching, and service. Candidates for the position should demonstrate a strong potential to achieve excellence in a program of scholarly research; the ability to secure extramural funding for research; and ability to teach at the university level. Experience working with diverse students and colleagues is preferred.

Principal duties:

The individual hired for the position is expected to conduct original research and generate scholarly publications sufficient for advancement to tenure at a major research university; develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in educational policy studies; supervise and serve on the committees of Master's and Doctoral candidates; serve on departmental, School of Education, and university committees; and engage in professional service at the university, local, regional, national and/or international level commensurate with their appointment level. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Located in Madison, Wisconsin, the School of Education and EPS (Educational Policy Studies) consistently rank at or near the top in national rankings of educational quality, productivity, and prestige. The mission of EPS is to deepen and expand the understanding of educational policy and practice, past and present, at local, national, and international levels in ways that advance educational quality and opportunity.

The School of Education is the home of prominent externally funded research centers and distinguished faculty in many educational disciplines. The successful candidate will join a faculty committed to the study and practice of educational policy across levels and venues. EPS maintains active programs of research, instruction, and outreach in U.S. and international elementary and secondary education, higher and continuing education, after-school and community-based settings, and educational policy settings. The position is affiliated with the ITP and its faculty and students from the departments of Economics, EPS, Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis, Educational Psychology, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology. ITP focuses on three themes:

1) design and implementation of field-based randomized studies in schools and other complex, real- world settings; 2) statistical analysis of quantitative survey, observational, and assessment data on education, with special attention to questions of causal inference; and 3) translation of research to maximize impact on educational policy at the federal, state, and local levels.

Further information about the position can be obtained from Professor Amy Claessens at claessens@wisc.edu. Unless confidentiality is requested in writing, information regarding applicants must be released upon request. Finalists cannot be guaranteed confidentiality.

Additional Information:

The Department of Educational Policy Studies is tied as the top-ranked public educational policy department in the U.S. It is housed in one of the top-ranked Schools of Education in the world, and in one of the leading research universities. As stated in the Our Shared Future plaque:The University of Wisconsin-Madison occupies ancestral Ho-Chunk land, a place their nation has called Teejop (day-JOPE) since time immemorial. In an 1832 treaty, the Ho-Chunk were forced to cede this territory. Decades of ethnic cleansing followed when both the federal and state government repeatedly, but unsuccessfully, sought to forcibly remove the Ho-Chunk from Wisconsin. This history of colonization informs our shared future of collaboration and innovation. Today, UW-Madison respects the inherent sovereignty of the Ho-Chunk Nation, along with the eleven other First Nations of Wisconsin.

Colonialism is an ongoing process. In the Department of Educational Policy Studies, we are working to think about what it means to occupy space on indigenous lands, learn about Wisconsin First Nations, address the intentional erasure of indigenous peoples in our research, teaching, and service, and begin the long process of decolonizing land relations. These efforts help fuel our focus on educational justice, equity, and inclusion across the department's work, including in our work on race, gender, and nationality as bases of injustice and social division.

The Department of Educational Policy Studies and the University of Wisconsin-Madison are committed to fostering faculty diversity. We encourage applications from potential candidates of all race, class, gender sexuality, ability, nationality, religious and other group identities; and we encourage applications from candidates who can demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
