Position Summary:

The School of Education at UW-Madison seeks to appoint an outstanding scholar engaged in research on educational policy from the disciplinary perspective of economics. The successful candidate will be appointed in a tenure track faculty position in the Department of Educational Policy Studies (EPS) and will contribute to an Institute of Education Sciences-funded Interdisciplinary Training Program (ITP).

Degree and area of specialization:

Candidates are required to have an earned doctorate in economics of education, economics, public policy, or related fields. Candidates should possess an interest in joining a diverse, multidisciplinary department dedicated to the study of educational history, policy, practice, and equity in its various manifestations, locally and globally.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

We seek a scholar with the potential for excellence in research, teaching, and service. Candidates for the position should demonstrate a strong potential to achieve excellence in a program of scholarly research; the ability to secure extramural funding for research; and ability to teach at the university level. Experience working with diverse students and colleagues is preferred.

Principal duties:

The individual hired for the position is expected to conduct original research and generate scholarly publications sufficient for advancement to tenure at a major research university; develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in educational policy studies; supervise and serve on the committees of Master's and Doctoral candidates; serve on departmental, School of Education, and university committees; and engage in professional service at the university, local, regional, national and/or international level commensurate with their appointment level. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Located in Madison, Wisconsin, the School of Education and EPS (Educational Policy Studies) consistently rank at or near the top in national rankings of educational quality, productivity, and prestige. The mission of EPS is to deepen and expand the understanding of educational policy and practice, past and present, at local, national, and international levels in ways that advance educational quality and opportunity.

The School of Education is the home of prominent externally funded research centers and distinguished faculty in many educational disciplines. The successful candidate will join a faculty committed to the study and practice of educational policy across levels and venues. EPS maintains active programs of research, instruction, and outreach in U.S. and international elementary and secondary education, higher and continuing education, after-school and community-based settings, and educational policy settings. The position is affiliated with the ITP and its faculty and students from the departments of Economics, EPS, Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis, Educational Psychology, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology. ITP focuses on three themes:

1) design and implementation of field-based randomized studies in schools and other complex, real- world settings; 2) statistical analysis of quantitative survey, observational, and assessment data on education, with special attention to questions of causal inference; and 3) translation of research to maximize impact on educational policy at the federal, state, and local levels.
