This position will develop and oversee departmental responsibilities as related to academic initiatives and assessment. This includes furthering partnerships with the Center for Learning and Student Success ( CLASS ), designated staff within the academic schools and colleges, the Office of Institutional Research, the Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Assessment. Develops and implements strategies for OSL staff to utilize Orange Success. The Coordinator will design, develop and implement tutoring and study groups, faculty connection programs, and other initiatives that create environments that support student learning and connect students to academic resources.

The Coordinator will also develop and implement all assessment initiatives for the department and the residential curriculum that serves as the educational priority for the department. Serves as chair for the assessment committee and directs the work of the committee members including conducting assessment projects, disseminating the findings, and training OSL staff on assessment practices. The coordinator will be responsible for the oversight of themed housing within the residence halls, including development and enhancement. This is a live-on position with on-call responsibilities. This coordinator reports to director of residence life. Qualifications
Master’s degree in human resources administration, student personnel, higher education, or related field required.

2-3 years post-master’s experience in Residence Life / Student Affairs required.

Demonstrated ability to develop, disseminate, and utilize assessment. Job Specific Qualifications
  • Previous residence hall administration experience and student development experience required. Experience working in a residential curriculum model preferred.
  • Must be well versed in assessment practices.
  • Experience implementing academic initiatives and/or learning communities in a residential setting.
  • Crisis response / on-call experience; confirmed skills in problem solving, decision-making, and emergency response.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage in work that is required.
  • Highly collaborative; demonstrated skills in working on a team. Previous experience working in a large, de-centralized system is preferred.
  • Strong desire and demonstrated ability to connect with students.
  • Demonstrated leadership style that is highly visible and accessible to department staff and students.
  • Demonstrated ability to train staff and students.
  • General knowledge of residence hall operations and facility management is required.
Responsibilities
  • Provides department-level leadership for academic initiatives and academic support programs.
  • Provides departmental leadership for residential faculty engagement initiatives.
  • Oversees the development and implementation of residentially-based study groups and tutoring.
  • Oversees residential themed housing management, implementation and development.
  • Creates and implements initiatives that support the residential curriculum
  • Creates and implements large-scale programs that promotes academic success in residence hall students.
  • Utilizes data and best practices to advocate for residential facilities that better support student academic success
  • Identify strategies that support students who are academically at-risk (including student staff). Partner with academic colleagues to design and deliver appropriate interventions.
  • Provides functional supervision to 28 professional staff in the areas of academic initiatives and academic support programs.
  • Co-designs and implements PAF 410 with the Coordinator of Staff Selection and Leadership.
  • Utilizes data to assist in policy development and planning to positively impact student retention
  • Serves as departmental contact for implementing Orange Success.
  • Establishes / furthers partnerships with academic support offices

Provides leadership and coordination for departmental assessment efforts:
  • Coordinate all assessment efforts within the Office of Student Living
  • Chairs the Office of Student Living Assessment Committee
  • Co-advises the OSL Climate Assessment Team (student-lead and driven).
  • Work collaboratively with the divisional assessment coordinator to ensure departmental assessment activities are properly aligned with divisional and university goals.
  • Directs the development and implementation of the annual assessment plan; create a yearly outline and timeline of planned projects.
  • Develops reports and presentations as requested by Office of Student Living leadership.
  • Develops a marketing and communications plan; ensures assessment findings are disseminated to stakeholders.
  • Utilize assessment data to inform strategic planning and decision making; serves on departmental strategic planning teams.
  • Establishes / furthers partnerships with the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment, the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, the divisional coordinator for assessment, and other departments as needed to support academic engagement goals.
  • Trains departmental staff on assessment strategies.
  • Utilizes assessment tools provided by the Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Assessment

On-call and crisis response:
  • Serves in an on-call rotation for the South Campus Apartment and off-campus student communities.
  • Provides staff coverage, including emergency duty, for the during the course of the year including hall openings, closing, and university vacation days.
  • Handles emergency situations utilizing crisis intervention skills and resources.

Engages in professional development activities, both on-campus as well as with regional / national professional organizations. This is to maintain professional skills, stay abreast of national trends and best practices, and maintain high visibility of Syracuse University for potential candidates. Participation in national organization committees/leadership opportunities, engaging in presentations and/or publications, and sharing knowledge gained is expected and encouraged.
Remains current in assessment techniques and best practices through on-going professional development.
  • Remains current on residential academic engagement trends.
  • Participates in the formal and informal evaluation process.
  • Actively engages in the development of intercultural competency skills.
  • Serves on University, Divisional, and Departmental committees as requested.
  • Participates in Syracuse University and Division Enrollment and the Student Experience staff development, orientation sessions, and on-boarding sessions.

Other duties as assigned / departmental leadership and general administrative responsibilities:
  • Serves on the leadership team for the Office of Student Living.
  • Addresses parent issues and concerns.
  • Leads aspects of departmental strategic planning.
  • Facilitates staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Participates in professional and paraprofessional staff recruitment, selection, and training activities.
  • Budget oversight for designated areas.
  • Other duties as assigned.
