The Kinder Institute for Urban Research at Rice University is seeking an extraordinary senior development professional to run our ambitious development program.

 Position Summary

Under supervision of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research Director, the Director of Development (DOD) serves as the chief development officer for the Institute and will plan, organize and manage the development of complex major gift support for the Institute’s fundraising priorities. In partnership with the Institute Director, the DOD oversees the management of the advisory board, providing them direction and support in maximizing the Institute’s fundraising potential. Specific responsibilities include identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major gift donors at the $100K+ level, and oversight of the annual fundraising luncheon. This position may also be responsible for developing and executing the fundraising strategy for a specific campaign priority. The DOD coordinates closely with the appropriate manager in the Development and Alumni Relations Division.  

Ideal candidates have extensive fundraising skills and experience in leading fundraising strategies, campaigns and initiatives at all donor levels, as well as the demonstrated ability to build relationships while securing individual donors, corporate gifts and endowments in support of the Institute’s strategic plan.

Essential Functions

  • Develops and manages a portfolio of major gift prospects through the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors with an emphasis on $100,000+ gifts
  • Identifies fundraising priorities and devises plans and strategies to accomplish goals
  • Works collaboratively with faculty and development colleagues in support of fundraising initiatives
  • Collaborates on development-related communications and events
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

Additional Functions / Information

  • Manages the Associate Director of Development and the Development Specialist
  • Required to attend after-hours functions
  • Oversees the Institute’s development events
  • Maintains and analyzes donor reports

Education, Experience, and Licenses/Certifications Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Five years of successful major gift fundraising experience at the $50K level with demonstrated success at the $100K+ level
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License (or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment) required with no more than three moving violations within the past 36 months and no convictions or deferred dispositions for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the past five years

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to quickly understand and remember details about alumni/donors and projects to which they are assigned
  • Excellent oral and written communications, excellent interpersonal communication, collaborative and negotiating skills

Preferences

  • Seven years of the experience specified above with an institution of higher education
  • Working knowledge of fundraising database software
  • Licenses/Certifications: Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE)
