The Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer reports directly to the President with responsibility for the effective leadership and administration of the major operational areas of the College. The Executive VP and COO recommends and implements policy and is the officer in charge when the President is away from campus fulfilling her external responsibilities and commitments.

 

As the principal aide to the President, the individual provides coordination and oversight in the development of defined core initiatives for the Office of the President. The individual serves as the President’s primary strategic liaison with university and community constituencies; plans, directs, or coordinates operational activities at the highest level of management with the help of vice presidents, other executive staff, and department managers. Operationally, the individual is responsible for the stewardship of all the college’s physical assets, public safety, crisis and emergency management, housing operations, parking, transportation, facilities operations, design and construction. Key operational and administrative areas reporting to this individual, in some cases, through a vice president, include areas of finance and budgeting, human resources, capital planning, facilities management, business operations, information technology, organizational excellence, emergency management, public safety and security, audit, compliance, risk management, technology, state government relations, economic development and any other specialized initiatives.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 · Serves as principal aide to the President; supports the President in handling a range of faculty, staff, student, and public affairs issues; directly handles matters of institutional importance on behalf of the President, as appropriate.

· Determines and formulates policies and provides overall direction for the college within the guidelines set up by the President and governing board.

· Coordinates and integrates the activities of senior leaders to develop and implement core initiatives for the Office of the President

· Serves as the key legislative liaison with responsibility for researching, monitoring and advising the President on issues affecting the college; creating policy proposals; working with state, local, and federal government entities, advocacy groups, citizens, and media to achieve key strategic legislative goals.

· Provides administrative and compliance assurance oversight working with senior staff in reviewing, updating, maintaining and assuring compliance with all policies, MOUs and other pertinent documents pertaining to Benedict College.

· Provides oversight for all human resources functions and services. Supports institutional efforts to expand staff development programs and enhance talent acquisition/management.

· Advises the President and senior leadership on best practices for positioning the College with civic and business leadership, alumni, regional elected representatives and other key stakeholders on issues having a direct, strategic impact on core initiatives.

· Prepares and contributes to the preparation of reports, briefings, presentations, and responses on institutional and strategic issues, as appropriate.

· Serves as the chief aide and liaison to the Board of Trustees on matters not directly handled by the President; handles program support activities and matters of institutional significance for the Board on behalf of the President.

· Coordinates special projects of the President

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

· Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively work with academic leadership, faculty, business and community leadership, legislative representatives, and key funding sources

· Knowledge and appreciation of the goals, objectives, operational structure, and challenges and opportunities of a private, church affiliated HBCU

· Strong analytical and critical thinking skills and the ability to analyze, summarize, and effectively present data

· Excellent oral and written communication skills

· Goal-oriented with an emphasis on planning, organization, and execution

· Demonstrated ability to effectively motivate and supervise others

· Ability to perform complex tasks and to prioritize multiple projects; advanced analytical and systems thinking skills

· Thorough knowledge of financial, operational and administrative practices and procedures

· Ability to foster a cooperative work environment

 

Professional Qualifications - (Minimum Requirements)

Desired qualifications include demonstrated experience in each of the areas of responsibility, with a strong emphasis on finance, institutional planning and strategy, creativity, flexibility and the ability to stimulate innovative thinking among staff and students.

Minimum position requirements include an earned doctorate from an accredited institution of higher education and at least 10 years of related experience at a senior staff level.
