Job Description

UMKC’s Division of Strategic Marketing and Communications is seeking a creative and collaborative Editor/Project Manager to join its team located on the UMKC Health Sciences Campus on Hospital Hill (working primarily with the schools of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and nursing and health studies). This position requires proven experience in writing and editing a broad range of content, and managing the production of various magazines and publications. Successful candidates must have strong organization skills, experience meeting deadlines and the ability to manage multiple projects and timelines simultaneously.

This position will:
  • Write, edit and proofread a wide range of marketing projects, meeting client goals and adapting for various mediums and audiences. Range of materials will include magazines, videos, emails, articles, websites, newsletters, brochures, invitations, etc.
  • Serve as managing editor for alumni magazines, newsletters and school publications, including planning, writing, editing and production.
    • Collaborate with designers, photographers and writers to develop creative ideas and execute high-quality content for publications.
    • Engage with clients throughout the production process to ensure success in meeting expectations for quality, budget and delivery date.
  • Serve as project manager for various print, digital and creative projects as determined by the department manager.
    • Juggle a variety of projects, demonstrating ability to move quickly on short-term needs while making progress on longer-term goals.
    • Communicate expectations, turnaround times, number of anticipated revisions and any updates to timeline or process with the client and communicate client feedback to other team members.
    • Schedule and lead project meetings and review action items with clients and creative team.
    • Present creative concepts to clients, respond productively to feedback and ask clarifying questions to resolve misunderstandings.
  • Demonstrate strong people skills and the ability to work with a variety of team members and customers, building positive relationships.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience, and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English or related area.
  • Ability to prioritize among multiple projects, meet deadlines and remain adaptable in a changing environment.
  • Experience in writing and editing for print and digital.
  • Magazine editing and production experience.
  • Proficient in AP style.
  • Working knowledge of the following software in Mac and PC formats: Microsoft Office, Adobe InDesign.
  • Proven record of accomplishment of producing high-quality print and digital media content.
  • Ability to proactively identify communications and marketing opportunities and develop supporting creative.
  • Experience working in higher education is a plus.

Full Time/Part Time

This is a full time, benefit eligible position.

Salary

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
