Position Summary and Responsibilities
The Infant Program Assistant Teacher in a laboratory classroom understands the importance of modeling contemporary developmentally appropriate practices throughout the day. The Assistant Teacher is responsible for supporting the Head Teacher as well as the whole classroom environment and creating positive, supportive relationships with the various constituents in a laboratory school: children, families, teaching colleagues, college students, college faculty, therapeutic support staff and administrators.

This Assistant teacher provides direct care to 6 infants (age range 6 weeks to 18 months). This caregiver provides nurturing and responsive care giving and engages in consistent and ongoing interaction and developmentally appropriate practices with infants or young toddlers throughout the day.

Responsibilities:
  • Lifting, carrying, rocking and comforting infants and toddlers throughout the day.
  • Creating safe, loving, comfortable environment for children at the end of the day.
  • Supports the Lead Teacher in implementing and modeling developmentally appropriate practices.
  • Seeks to build a partnership with each family to meet the needs of the child's developmental growth.
  • Has a positive attitude and rises to the daily challenges, and joys, of working with young children.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Site Director.



Hours: Monday through Friday, 9:15 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.

Qualifications
  • Two to five years of experience in an early child care/education setting required.
  • Associate’s degree in child education or Bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Must be able to make careful observations and respond quickly and flexibly to toddlers or infants in order to support their needs in gross motor situations, conflict resolution etc.
  • Must be able to assess and address the various and rapidly changing needs of children and be able to effectively multi-task.
  • Must model developmentally appropriate practice and be comfortable providing direction and supervision to college students learning to work with infants and toddlers.
  • Must be able to work collaboratively and professionally with staff, parents and college students.
  • Punctuality and consistency in attendance is critical to maintaining a sense of comfort, reliability and structure for the children in our care.
  • Ability to keep accurate records of each infant’s or toddler’s diapering, toileting, napping and eating schedule as well as be able to offer comments or information to parents and other
    teachers about the general activity patterns throughout the day.
  • Knowledge and compliance with licensing, health and safety regulations at all times.
  • Infant and child CPR certification is required.
  • Must be able to successfully meet all NYS background-check requirements.
