San Francisco State University’s School of Theatre & Dance offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Theatrical Scenic/Set Design beginning August 2022. We seek a colleague, whose teaching and creative activity include live performance/theatrical scenic design.  We are especially interested in qualified candidates with a demonstrated commitment and contribution to the diversity and excellence of our academic community through their creative work, teaching, and service. 

The School of Theatre & Dance offers a comprehensive program of both practical and theoretical courses for undergraduate and graduate students whose interests center on various aspects of educational and professional theatre and/or dance.  As a center for the training of future theatre artists, the School of Theatre & Dance is committed to introducing a diversity of theatrical traditions and cultures to students.  The School of Theatre & Dance is one of the most historically significant programs in the nation. Our school currently has approximately 250 undergraduate students. The National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST) accredits the theatre degree within the School of Theatre & Dance.

Responsibilities:

The position requires undergraduate and graduate teaching in the area of live performance/theatrical set design and related topics, advising and mentoring the undergraduate set and prop design students, and collaborating with all design areas for all Theatre and Dance productions in the School, as well as continuing an active and ongoing program of professional creative work in one’s area of specialty, and ongoing committee and service assignments. Qualifications:

  • MFA or equivalent terminal degree from an accredited program. Terminal degree must be completed by the first day of employment;
  • Professional level expertise and active professional achievement in design in the area of theatrical set/scenic or other similar live entertainment design;
  • Record of working and communicating effectively with colleagues and students.

Preferred:

  • Record of teaching contributions in the area of live performance/theatrical set design;
  • Active record of scholarhip and/or creative activity related to performance/theatrical set design
  • University-level teaching in theatrical or entertainment design;
  • Active in national or international professional theatre associations or other equivalent and recognized design organizations;
  • Proven experience that demonstrates an ability to guide undergraduate students through a theatrical design process;
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate inclusion, diversity, and educational equity in teaching, and/or scholarship/creative works and their creation processes;
  • Experience teaching and working closely with students from historically under-represented communities.
  • Interest in re-building and supporting an MFA degree program.
