Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University–New Brunswick seeks a collaborative, dynamic dance professional and visionary leader as the next chair of its Dance Department. The chair oversees the department’s curriculum, programs, and operations, working collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and administration to cultivate a distinctive identity for the department that promotes artistic, scholarly, and pedagogical excellence and innovation as well as a sustained commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and access. Reporting to the dean of Mason Gross School of the Arts, the chair will lead the department toward a strategic, unifying vision that bolsters its nationally recognized programs, builds upon current efforts to develop an inclusive, forward-looking curriculum, engages the broader New Brunswick community, and fosters collaboration across the department, the school, and a range of disciplines across the university.

The successful candidate will possess a collaborative, communicative, and transparent leadership style, a demonstrated commitment to advancing issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion, and experience working successfully with a broad and diverse range of individuals and constituencies. We seek someone who will foster collegiality and mutual respect and will embrace opportunities to increase the department’s local, national, and global visibility as well as generally serve as the primary advocate for the department. Responsibilities include: planning and oversight of the department’s budget; supervising department personnel, including hiring of faculty and staff; implementing strategies to recruit and retain a diverse faculty, staff, and student body; engaging in teaching and creative practice in the area of expertise; working with the dean and the school’s development office to fundraise and otherwise engage alumni and donors in support of the department; and engaging external audiences, organizations, and dance professionals toward realizing the department’s overall vision and mission, along with that of Mason Gross as a whole. Mason Gross School of the Arts is deeply committed to the pursuit of equity, diversity, inclusion, and access and especially encourages applications from women, underrepresented minorities, and other individuals who belong to groups that have been historically underrepresented or marginalized within higher education and the arts.

Candidates must have leadership experience and a record of achievement in teaching as well as dance practice and/or scholarship appropriate for appointment at the rank of tenured associate or full professor. Candidates must also have a relevant terminal degree (typically an MFA or PhD) or commensurate professional experience. This position is a 12-month appointment at the rank of associate or full professor with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2022. Candidates should provide a cover letter, curriculum vitae, the names and contact information of four references (who will not be contacted unless candidates advance in the process), and a one-page statement that outlines in some detail the candidate’s engagement with issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion. For best consideration, apply by November 15, 2021. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled.
