Position Purpose

The Lamont Gallery attendant will contribute to the operation of the Lamont Gallery by staffing exhibitions during opening hours, creating a welcoming learning environment for visitors of all ages, assisting with exhibition research and/or installation, ensuring effective, professional security of gallery displays, supporting events and programs, and contributing to gallery projects such as student curator activities, conducting research on artists and lenders, assisting with class visits, organizing exhibition and gallery materials and supplies, sending out mailings, helping with marketing and publicity, and other projects. Hours are periodic and on call, and may include weekdays, weekends, and/or evenings.

About the Lamont Gallery:

The Lamont Gallery, located in the Frederick R. Mayer Art Center, is a dynamic exhibition and teaching space that celebrates the arts through showcasing the work of regional, national, and international artists in thematic exhibitions. Classes from Phillips Exeter Academy, groups from other schools and organizations, and visitors of all ages are encouraged to experience and learn about the arts in a welcoming setting. Informed by the Harkness teaching philosophy, the Lamont Gallerys programs are characterized by inquiry, engagement, dialogue, and discussion.

Key Accountabilities
  • Contribute to providing a welcoming environment that promotes visitor engagement and learning, and create a positive relationships with employees, students, alumni, and regional visitors in person, by phone, or via email.
  • Assist in providing a safe and secure environment for both people and works of art by overseeing gallery security during open hours. Open and/or close gallery for special events.
  • Support exhibition installation projects including helping produce and/or install signage, artwork, banners, or other exhibition components.
  • Assist gallery staff in event and program administration, including set up, break down, and supporting event logistics
  • Assist gallery staff in supporting student curatorial and cultural programs
  • Provide office support to gallery director and curator and gallery manager, including preparation of mailings, photocopying, research on artists, assisting on-site visiting artist programs, etc.
  • Assist gallery staff in researching background materials for wall text and other gallery materials.
  • Support off-site gallery programs (campus, local) when necessary.
  • Assist with other support or clerical duties as assigned.

Incumbent is expected to work with a high level of independence and autonomy, and exercise a high degree of initiative, influence, and judgment in decisions impacting staff, students, and department operations.

Internal & External Contacts

Frequent contact with regional visitors, students, PEA administrative and academic offices, faculty, staff, Institutional Advancement and alumni. Contact with parents, families, outside groups, and local community organizations.

Position Requirements

Education
  • College degree is preferred.
Experience
  • Knowledge of art gallery/museum procedures and office administration.
  • Experience with visitor/guest services.
  • Comfort with basic technology applications and software such as word processing, email, and Internet research.
  • Experience in an educational or campus setting is highly desired.
Skills & Knowledge
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships with employees and visitors.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills. Skills in arts research a plus.
  • A strict adherence to confidential policies is required.
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Regular and consistent attendance with the ability to work a flexible schedule including extended hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must possess excellent guest service and hospitality skills and projects a positive image while interacting with students, faculty, staff and guests.
  • Experience in MS Office, email, attachments, and web/library research. Additional skills in digital imaging, design, social media, or multimedia a plus.
  • Willingness and ability to learn additional applications as needed.
  • Respect for diversity of identities and experiences, an orientation toward equity and inclusion, and cultural competency in all aspects of Academy life.
  • High degree of organizational skills with the ability to be flexible and multi-task with accuracy.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written directions, maintain a professional demeanor and restraint at all times, including stressful situations.
