Africana Studies – Gender, Women’s & Sexuality Studies – Critical Race Theory

Carleton College invites applications for a senior (tenured associate or full professor) position split between Africana Studies and Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies (GWSS) or other relevant departments or fields to begin September 1, 2022. Candidates are expected to have the following: (1) A Ph.D. in relevant fields, (2) a record of distinction in teaching, research, and service, and (3) a commitment to theorizing from and/or centering the experience of Black/African descended peoples. We welcome applicants who demonstrate interdisciplinary training at the intersection of Africana Studies, GWSS, and Critical Race Theory. Teaching responsibilities include introductory and capstone courses in Africana Studies, more specialized courses and seminars in GWSS or the candidate’s areas of specialization and research, as well as advising student theses and independent research. We encourage developing courses on Black Sexualities, Queer, and Feminist Studies as well as Critical Race Theory. We seek applicants with a demonstrated commitment to transformative undergraduate education and a distinguished record of scholarship. Also, key to this position is possession of substantial leadership qualities for developing our Africana Studies program and eagerness to serve as its director and to contribute to the GWSS program. This position will be primarily housed in Africana Studies with secondary responsibilities in GWSS. We desire candidates who can work to bridge disciplinary divides and expand the impact of Africana Studies and GWSS at our small liberal arts college.

Carleton is a highly selective liberal arts college with a student body of approximately 2,000.  Located in the historic and thriving town of Northfield, Minnesota, we are forty-five miles south of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, whose greater metro area has a diverse population of three million people and a rich variety of cultural resources. We are a community of scholars committed to the goal of excellence in undergraduate education, in research, and in building a more socially just, diverse, and inclusive society in all of our endeavors. We seek candidates who share these values and commitments.

To apply for this position, candidates should submit a letter of application, a curriculum vitae, a course syllabus and an annotated listing of courses they are prepared to teach, and a statement of teaching philosophy that addresses our small liberal arts college environment. In the statement of teaching philosophy, we are particularly interested in hearing about candidates' specific classroom strategies for pursuing transformative learning while promoting equity, critically examining histories of oppression, and fostering a respectful classroom environment. Letters of recommendation will be requested for selected candidates following the initial review of materials. These materials should be submitted at To ensure full consideration, please submit all application materials by November 15, 2021.
