Job Description Summary

POSITION : Twelve month tenure track position, Professor and Head, Department of Consumer and Design Sciences, position is available beginning August 1, 2022.

RESPONSIBILITIES : The responsibilities of the Head are to provide visionary leadership and overall management of the Department. The Head also serves as the senior faculty administrator and promotes excellence in teaching, research and extension/outreach programs. The position demands performance of professional level duties to include providing academic and administrative leadership to the Department; providing leadership for faculty development, program development and assessment, long-range planning, budgeting, and public relations; providing leadership for recruitment and retention of diverse students and faculty; supervising and evaluating personnel; supervising Cooperative Extension and other outreach activities; serving as part of the College’s Leadership team; serving on university committees; developing and maintaining community and business partnerships; serving as a liaison to administration, alumni, and the community; addressing student issues; and maximizing use of space and physical facilities. In addition, the Head serves as an advocate for department interests, needs and programs, which includes leadership in fund raising/development activities and working with industry and advisory boards.

DEPARTMENT : The Department of Consumer and Design Sciences offers undergraduate degrees in Apparel, Merchandising, Design and Production Management ( AMDP ), Interior Design ( INDS ), and Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies ( PNPS ). AMDP, an affiliate of the American Apparel and Footwear Association and member of the National Retail Federation, has a unified core curriculum with divergent options in Merchandising or Design and Production Management. INDS is CIDA -accredited and nationally-ranked, and has specialized studios in residential, commercial, healthcare, and hospitality design. PNPS uniquely integrates varied career directions in philanthropy and nonprofit organizations with consumer financial planning for wealth management. All programs require a full-time internship. COLLEGE : The College of Human Sciences at Auburn University, established in 1916, has approximately 1,600 students distributed among three departments: Consumer and Design Sciences; Nutrition, Dietetics and Hospitality Management; and Human Development and Family Science, and an Office of Global Education. These academic units offer seven undergraduate degrees, four minors, five master’s degree programs, and three doctoral programs. Minimum Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS : Possess an earned doctorate and academic experience in one of the following: 1) apparel merchandising/retailing; 2) apparel design and production management; 3) interior design/architecture; 4) philanthropy and nonprofit studies; 5) wealth management; or 6) a related discipline at the time employment begins

Academic credentials must be commensurate for a Full Professor appointment representing excellence in teaching, research and/or extension/outreach

Must demonstrate an understanding of the breadth and depth of the different departmental constituencies e.g., graduate studies, Cooperative Extension

Possess excellent interpersonal communication skills and demonstrate effective communication with faculty, staff, stakeholders, parents and students

Demonstrate leadership, organizational skills, budget/resource management ability, experience with accreditation processes, personnel management expertise, recruitment skills, and the ability to secure and sustain funding for research, outreach, and development

Have strong academic and industry networks

Meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the term of employment
