Department: Arts Administration, Education and Policy

Position: Department Chair

Rank: Associate Professor or Professor

Description:

The Ohio State University seeks a department chair who will provide ambitious and innovative leadership for its Department of Arts Administration, Education and Policy. Anticipated start date is July 1, 2022. The chair will serve as the administrative head of the Department, with oversight of faculty, staff, curriculum, budget, and strategic direction. The new chair will lead the Department in defining and implementing its vision, with the goal of developing its strengths and maintaining its competitiveness within a rapidly evolving academic environment. The successful candidate will be bold and transparent and will provide leadership for the variety of academic and training programs offered by the Department, including Art Education, Arts Administration and Policy, Arts Management, and Museum Education. The ideal candidate will be a visionary and inspiring leader--one who is committed to fostering an inclusive and innovative learning environment, one who is skilled in directing change with a varied group of people representing diverse areas of study, and one who is perceptive in developing the academic potential of faculty, staff and students.

The new chair will be an innovator in terms of curriculum development, outreach, engagement, visibility, organization, and governance, taking into account the Department’s position within a College of Arts and Sciences that includes 37 other academic units. The new chair should be poised to engage with students, faculty, staff, and alumni in fostering deep collaborations with other arts and humanities departments and with interdisciplinary initiatives across the College and beyond. Finally, the new chair will be charged with collaborating with university and arts leaders to finalize the Department’s integration into Ohio State’s emerging, vibrant Arts District (https://artsandsciences.osu.edu/arts-district) as well as the development of the Lawrence and Isabel Barnett Center for Integrated Arts and Enterprise (https://barnettcenter.osu.edu/). The successful candidate will be a dedicated educator and recognized scholar with expertise in one of the Department’s two major areas of expertise: Art Education or Arts Administration and Policy

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Art Education, Arts Administration and Policy, or a related field
  • National/international reputation commensurate with the rank of a tenured Associate Professor or Professor at The Ohio State University, including a distinguished record of scholarly achievement, teaching excellence and professional service as well as evidence of continued excellence in all three of these areas in the future
  • Demonstrated and effective experience in administrative leadership within academia, including fundraising, budget planning and personnel management
  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion and the demonstrated ability to work with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students, and community stakeholders in Columbus and across Ohio
  • An innovative vision for the future of the Department and its various disciplines as well as the ability to work effectively across disciplines within a diverse and complex organization
  • Extensive work in graduate education with the ability to support and further develop the Department’s existing PhD and MA programs
  • Experience in successful collaborations with entities outside the University (e.g., community partners, professional arts organizations)
