Assistant/Associate/Full Professor, Environmental Economics



Job Summary

As an Assistant/Associate/Full professor of Environmental Economics, the successful candidate will have expertise in applying economic principles to better understand the drivers behind environmental issues and to estimate the potential impacts of environmental policies or changes in those policies on the economy. The candidate is expected to address pressing issues related to water and the environment in Southwest Florida (e.g., climate change, sea level rise, harmful algal blooms, water supply, changes in land use, environmental justice). This position represents a joint appointment between the Lutgert College of Business (LCOB) and The Water School, with the former serving as the home academic unit.

This position represents a research- and outreach-intensive role. The candidate will be expected to develop a successful research program that disseminates research findings to the region and to the academic community, as appropriate, and to acquire external support. The successful candidate will be expected to teach existing or develop new courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels. As a senior member of the faculty, the successful candidate will be expected to serve as a mentor to more junior faculty.

As an Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Environmental Economics, with a joint appointment between the Department of Economics and Finance (LCOB) and The Water School, the successful candidate will teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels, as applicable; be involved in course and/or curriculum development; conduct research/scholarship; participate on College and University committees and/or initiatives; and perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Job Duties
  • Conducts scholarly activities in the field of environmental economics.
  • Organizes and participates in various public forums related to environmental economics.
  • Maintains classification as Scholarly Academic under the LCOB faculty guidelines.
  • Teaches up to two classes per semester and serves on College and University committees.

Required Qualifications

Earned Doctorate in Applied Economics, Agricultural Economics, Economics or closely related field from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent accreditation.

Appropriate record and experience for the appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor in the LCOB .

Preferred Qualifications
  • Established research stream resulting in peer reviewed publications that would allow the faculty member to be classified as Scholarly Academic under the LCOB faculty guidelines.
  • Experience in teaching a variety of economics classes in an AACSB International accredited business school.
  • Ability and eagerness to teach a course(s) on environmental economics and advise graduate students in The Water School.
  • Willingness to interact with local, regional, and national media on a variety of topics relating to The Water School and the array of environmental issues facing Southwest Florida.
Special Instructions to Applicants

Together, the Department of Economics and Finance in the Lutgert College of Business (LCOB) and The Water School at FGCU seek to hire an Environmental Economist. The Water School brings together academic experts from multiple fields to address water and environmental related opportunities and challenges facing the state of Florida and the region. The three main economic drivers in the state of Florida (Agriculture, Real Estate Development and Tourism) are all directly impacted by water issues. We seek an Environmental Economist to address the connections and interdependence between human economies and natural ecosystems, with a focus on identifying incentives and other mechanisms that an promote a healthy economy while sustaining the environment and associated natural resources.

This is a 9-month appointment with summer support that will feature 60% research and 40% combined teaching and service. The mix of teaching and service will be adjusted based on the needs of the department and The Water School. The start date for this position will be August 2022.

Appointment will be made on a 9-month multi-year appointment basis available August 2022.
