Job Summary

The Water School at FGCU (https://www.fgcu.edu/thewaterschool/) is hiring 15 faculty for Fall 2022 across a range of disciplines related to water and the environment. The Water School is an interdisciplinary enterprise that brings together faculty from five colleges and schools representing 15 departments to focus on the environmental, economic, and human dimensions of coastal resilience, ecosystem integrity, health and wellbeing, and restoration and remediation.

This appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of Marine and Earth Sciences.

The Department of Marine and Earth Sciences at Florida Gulf Coast University seeks candidates with research interests in coastal geomorphology and resilience for an Assistant Professor position starting in Fall 2022. We seek applicants with one or both of the following skills and experiences.
1) A coastal geologist employing field-based, empirical methods, ideally with interests in barrier island dynamics and coastal sedimentology.
2) A coastal geomorphologist employing numerical, remote sensing, or landscape evolution modeling, ideally with interests in barrier island dynamics and fluency in coastal engineering and management. This person, if not a Ph.D. in Geology, should have a strong educational background in geology.

This successful candidate will collaborate with faculty and community members participating in the Southwest Florida Regional Resiliency Compact, which focuses on resilience to sea-level rise and storminess. Excellence in oral and written communication is required. The new faculty member will teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels as applicable. Courses may include Physical Geology, Environmental Geology, Coastal Geomorphology, Sedimentology/Stratigraphy, and Coastal Zone Management.

The successful candidate will be involved in the course and/or curriculum development; conduct research/scholarship; participate in College and University committees and/or initiatives, and perform other duties as assigned.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Develop and teach assigned courses: prepare syllabi and instruction materials, coordinate lectures, e valuate students and maintain highest possible standards of classroom instruction.
  • Collaborate with other faculty to develop/revise curriculum.
  • Develop and maintain an independent and productive research program that also involves students.
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate students, as appropriate, in research.
  • Seek external funding to support research program, including students.
  • Demonstrate quality of research through peer-review.
  • Stay current with new developments in field of instruction and maintain disciplinary skills through professional development activities appropriate to higher education faculty.
  • Actively serve on university committees and participate in institutional meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Geology or equivalent, or related area from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent accreditation.
  • Must meet the University and College criteria for the appointment to the level of Assistant Professor.
  • Evidence of scholarly expertise related to coastal geomorphology.
  • ABD will be considered if a degree is conferred by August 7, 2022. If the successful candidate is ABD, the appointment will be made at a Lecturer level on a fixed contract.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Preferred candidates are those whose teaching and research experience and interests align with the programs and mission of The Water School.
  • Teaching experience as instructor of record.
  • Post-doctoral experience.
  • Strong research agenda with well-defined goals.
  • Interdisciplinary teaching and research perspective with well-defined research goals. Willingness to engage in service opportunities commensurate with career maturity.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Experience or commitment to the use of technology in distance learning & university teaching. Interest in collaborating both within and outside the University in the development and delivery of instruction resulting in improved student learning. Must value continued scholarship and service to the school and university.
  • Ability to contribute effectively and collegially to a positive, dynamic, and inclusive learning environment for a diverse student population.
