Assistant Professor of Biology (2021)



The Department of Biology at Washington and Lee University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Biology, beginning July 1, 2022. Candidates should be prepared to teach a 200-level course in Genetics, a Microbiology course, with lab, and additional upper division lecture courses. Inclusion of students in research is also a central value of our teacher-scholar model. We are especially interested in candidates with a background in Neuroscience or microbial genetics that could support interdisciplinary programs in Neuroscience or Environmental Studies.

The school calendar consists of two 12-week terms, one in the fall and one in the winter, and a 4-week spring term. The teaching load is 5.5 courses per year, with the half course most often taught every other year in our unique spring term. There is no summer teaching. Support for research includes laboratory start-up funding, conference funding, summer research funding, and pre-tenure leave, as well as opportunities to present to faculty cohorts and programs on campus; teaching support is available through university-wide workshops.

Washington and Lee University is a highly selective, independent, co-educational, liberal arts college of approximately 1850 undergraduate and 400 law students and located in Lexington, VA, three hours southwest of Washington, DC. W&L is consistently ranked among the top 12 national liberal arts colleges. Established in 1749, it is the ninth oldest institution of higher learning in the nation.

PhD required by time of appointment. Undergraduate teaching experience is highly desirable.

The university requires employees to become fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and new employees must provide proof of at least their first shot prior to the first day of employment. Individuals may seek a medical or a religious exemption to the vaccination requirement.
