Job Summary:
Reporting to the Director for Education Program, the Health Care Education Manager develops student learning experiences, including internships, clinical observation experiences, and course-related experiential learning with a focus, broadly, on health. This individual will build and support relationships for student learning opportunities between the Institute for the Advancement of Community Health and a variety of clinical and community partners, including but not limited to Prisma Health System. Additionally, this individual may support and collaborate with faculty and staff from centers and institutes at Furman to build health related learning experiences with a liberal arts and interdisciplinary approach. The Health Education Manager may have the opportunity to instruct courses that support experiential learning and have an applied, reflection objective.

Job Description:

Responsibilities:

Develops and maintains health experiences, including pre-professional clinical experiences as well as community and public health experiences in a range of organizational settings
  • Meets with and maintains relationships with designated host at sites to introduce, explain, and maintain successful high-impact experiential learning opportunities.
  • Provides information on Furman's guidelines and expectations for learning experiences and works with the site on their requirements and needs related to providing this experience.
  • Provides the information and schedules to the sites to meet the site's documentation requirements, providing required forms and documents, lists of student participants, schedules for student participants and any updates required.
  • Obtains feedback on the pre-professional medical experience from both the student and the site, using the feedback to improve the pre-professional medical experience and support provided by the Manager.
  • Manages and organizes the rosters for Furman courses and programs that have an experiential component at Prisma Health System including management of orientation, scheduling and coordination with each of the departments participating in the program, and coordination of the clearance process in cooperation with the Office of Student Services.


Creates new educational health-oriented experiences that are aligned with the curriculum and course offerings of Furman academic departments and that offer an array of experiences in terms of specialty, setting and health care approach (e.g., medicine, community health, public health)
  • Collaborates with Furman's Center for Engaged Learning, Internship Office, Study Away, Office of Pre-Professional Advising, Center for Inclusive Communities, the Malone Career Center and academic departments to identify needs in new offerings and develop shared programming.


Organizes and develops experiences with a scaffolded approach to support students throughout an undergraduate career and at the graduate level, including experiential learning and on-campus events (CLPs, Community Health Symposium, etc.).

Assist faculty and other departments with internship requirements including defining educational objectives, outcomes, and other specifics of the internship experience, providing contacts and information for specific experiences.

As needed, serves as the Instructor for undergraduate (i.e. HSC 505) and graduate (i.e. CEM 601, CEM 606) level courses that are aimed at supporting high-impact experiential learning through reflection and dialogue.

Builds infrastructure for assessment and reporting of health experiences and works collaboratively with the Health Careers Internship Coordinator to collect assessment data from students and hosts.

Prepares periodic reports of student contacts, organization contacts and medical experiences completed by students for supervisor. Periodically assesses program services through surveys, etc.

Performs administrative tasks such as; setting appointments, e-mail, phone calls, paperwork, photocopying, organizing, filing, etc.

Communicates openly and recognizes contributions of co-workers and supervisor.

Completes performance review process with supervisor to understand job performance expectations and how they fit into the department and university goals.

Pursues professional development to keep pace with demands for services and information; including maintaining up to date information about the department and university.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Relationships:

Daily contact with varied health professionals to plan, coordinate, solve problems and present information and suggestions related to mutual goals around student experiences and learning. Requires maintaining a professional relationship as a representative of Furman.

Frequent contact with faculty and other academic partners to exchange factual information and explanation of rules, regulations, practices or functions.

Works as part of the Education team within the Institute for the Advancement of Community Health to support a cohesive array of educational offerings for Furman students interested in health and health-related careers.

Responsibility for Final Decisions:

Responsible for own work. May assist or instruct others doing similar work; including student workers.

Tasks involve interpretation of data and/or procedures to address problems or situations that are not clearly defined. Work involves non-routine/diverse work not defined by procedures.

Errors may be detected within the department or section in which they occur, but may affect the work of others within the unit to trace errors and make corrections

Spends time planning, scheduling, and assigning priorities of several ongoing assignments.

Reports To: Director of Education Programs

Work is performed independently except where the interpretation of law, policy, rule, complex procedure or request for exception is required.

Education/Skill Requirements:

Masters Degree in related field (Education or health-related discipline) and significant interaction and contacts with the health and/or healthcare community preferred.

Excellent communication, organization and interpersonal skills and ability to understand and apply legal and liability parameters.

Work Conditions: Work is performed under usual office conditions.
