The primary responsibility of the Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Studies is to support the mission and values of the University of Notre Dame and the Mendoza College of Business.  The assistant dean pursues this responsibility through leading and mentoring a team of academic advisors, a program coordinator and an administrative assistant to provide consistent academic advice and promote ethical, values-based leadership in accord with the University’s policies.  The goal of the academic advising office that the assistant dean oversees is to ensure students maximize the opportunities available during their time at Notre Dame so that they are fully engaged in the process and, ultimately, prepared for the challenges that await them in their future occupations.  Guiding students to make thoughtful, well-reasoned choices of majors and supplementary coursework is at the heart of our mission.  The assistant dean is responsible for raising student awareness of opportunities to develop their character and skill sets through involvement with research, international study, conferences, competitions, scholarships & fellowships, service and student clubs.

As the dean's designee and College leader and liaison for all undergraduate advising and administrative matters, the assistant dean leads efforts in a wide variety of areas that support undergraduate education.  This person creates and improves integrated communications channels that ensure students understand the responsibilities and opportunities to which their education calls them.  Responsibilities include making daily, non-routine decisions on a host of student issues ranging from recommendations for student awards to academic dismissal, which often require close coordination with university faculty/staff to best respond to student needs.  The assistant dean also works closely with the college’s Department Chairs to ensure course availability and appropriate faculty scheduling, classroom allocation and section sizes for required business courses. Through extensive data analysis, the assistant dean creates a considerable number of customized ad hoc reports that provide the basis for such decisions as; projected course offerings, class size, graduation progress, and student enrollment. This person also monitors study abroad options, available courses, and international course approvals.

Additional responsibilities of this office range from developing and leading orientation programs for sophomores to coordination and execution of the annual undergraduate college graduation ceremonies.

The assistant dean is often the liaison to various campus units, such as departments and other colleges and school on campus. This includes serving on various College and University committees such as the College Council, Undergraduate Curriculum Review Committee, University Calendar Committee, Advisory Committee on Academic Code and Policy, University Readmissions Committee, University Scholarship, Admissions and Financial Aid Committee, Registrar's Dean Advisory Group, and International Study Advisory Committee.

The assistant dean is encouraged to teach in the undergraduate program according to the person’s qualifications and interests.

The rank of the advising or teaching professor (assistant, associate, or full) will be determined on the qualifications and experience of the candidate, in accord with the Academic Articles.  This is not a tenure-eligible position.

Salary for this position will be commensurate with candidate’s with qualifications and experience.
