DEPARTMENT

The School of Teacher Education at Florida State University (FSU) invites applicants for a tenure track position at the assistant or associate professor rank with expertise in Visual Disabilities Education. As a preeminent research institution, FSU upholds its responsibility to serve Florida citizens and beyond through innovation, creativity, and scholarship. We seek a colleague who embraces the belief that rigorous research and training teachers in the use of evidence-based practices are key to improving educational outcomes for individuals with visual impairment. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in research focused on preparing teachers of students with visual impairments and the individuals they serve, apply for external funding to support new projects, and mentor doctoral students in their scholarly endeavors. Leadership is an essential aspect of this position.

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Engage in a well-defined scholarship agenda focused on visual disabilities
  • Advise master’s and doctoral students
  • Serve on student graduate student committees
  • Prepare research and training grant proposals to external funding agencies
  • Support and expand existing partnerships/relationships with regional providers of services to individuals with visual impairments and national colleagues
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in visual disabilities
  • Supervise field experiences (i.e., practicum and internship)
  • Provide service to schools, the University, Department, College, and the profession
  • Work with faculty and staff to market and maintain the program

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Candidates should have a solid foundation in visual disabilities education
  • Earned doctorate in visual disabilities, special education, or a closely related field
  • Commitment to and experience working with diverse student populations
  • Certification as a teacher of students with visual impairments
  • At least 3 years of successful PreK–12 work with students with visual impairments
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Candidates at the associate professor rank should have an established record of high-quality scholarship (e.g., recent publications in peer reviewed journals, recent presentations at national or international conferences, etc.).
  • Candidates at the assistant professor rank should show strong potential for high-quality scholarship through research training and emerging publication record

 

PREFERENCES

  • Experience in writing research and/or training grants
  • Recent successful work on an externally funded research or training grant
  • Experience advising graduate students
  • Experience with pre-service and in-service teacher preparation
  • Expertise in orientation and mobility or working with children whose multiple disabilities include visual impairment
  • Experience teaching methods courses in the area of visual disabilities
