Office of Research and Innovation: The Director of Research Operations is a member of the Vice President for Research and Innovation’s (VPRI) executive team, leading significant projects to strengthen support for research and improve research administration across campus and within the Office of Research and Innovation (ORI). This position will oversee a number of high-level administrative, operational and financial functions that are essential to Miami University’s growing research agenda.

The Director of Research and Operations is responsible for analyzing and forecasting departmental budgets and budgets that provide internal seed funding to researchers; Provides financial direction, develops budgets, forecasts and analyzes research-relevant income and expenses, monitors organizational growth and fiscal sustainability, prepares organizational financial reports to share with university leadership, and approves major expenditures; Projecting purchasing needs for the ORI; Management of frequently-changing content on the ORI website and related university-wide research communications; Management, stewardship and complex strategic analysis of university-wide research performance data including Cayuse proposal and award data; Assists the VPRI with preparing materials for internal and external audiences regarding institutional research benchmarks and performance critical to national research reputation rankings; Manages classified and student employees through supervision, hiring, and evaluations; and leading and contributing to cross-division special projects critical to growing externally-funded research. The DRO supports a culture of access and inclusion, service orientation, and continuous improvement to deliver effective and efficient research operations in the face of ever-changing researcher needs, policies, practices and regulatory obligations. The DRO directly reports to the VPRI.

Required: Bachelor’s Degree, any discipline; Eight years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Position not eligible for H-1B sponsorship.

Consideration may be given to candidates with experience at a major research university or other institution of comparable complexity; Experience in a team-based professional setting; Experience leading significant projects, including developing strategy, identifying stakeholders, using inclusive practices, and project reporting; Experience developing and managing a shared-services environment; Experience implementing technology/automation projects; Knowledge of university research infrastructure, including equipment, facilities, and human capital; Experience with university enterprise systems, particularly Banner, Bi and Buyway; Functional knowledge of Cayuse, Miami’s proposal routing and award management system.
