Job Summary

Performs laboratory procedures involving histological tissue preparations, immunohistochemistry, histochemistry, and assists research associates with special projects and activities.

Essential Functions

1. Receives and accessions tissue specimens, performs gross trimming and histological preparation of tissue samples.
2. Assures time sensitive preparations of diagnostic, research and teaching histology slides, orders supplies, inspects and maintains equipment and facilities and coordinates with others for facility and equipment maintenance.
3. Maintains a safe, clean work environment including proper labelling, use, and storage of chemicals/specimens, and disposal of the same.
4. Provides professional and administrative assistance for developing proposals, plans, and protocols, coordinating support services from others, and preparing reports.

Level III – Associates degree in a technical or scientific field related to area of assignment plus 4 years of experience in histology practices.

Level IV – Associates degree in a technical or scientific field related to area of assignment plus 6 years of experience in histology practices.

Minimum Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of processes, methods and procedures associated with a limited range of engineering or scientific problems . Training in histology practices including tissue trimming and fixation, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, staining and related laboratory operations.

Desired Qualifications

Formal training in histotechnology, certification as Histotechnician or Histotechnologist ( ASCP ) desired.
