Position Summary 

The Senior Accountant General Ledger and Accounts Payable position is responsible for overseeing the accounting and management of multiple aspects of the general ledger and accounts payable for the College. This position supervises the General Ledger Accountant and the Accounts Payable Accountant positions. The Senior Accountant is responsible for managing and reconciling several of the College’s bank and balance sheet accounts, as well as reconciling the State of Colorado’s enterprise financial system (CORE).    

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.  
  • At least three years of progressively responsible accounting and supervisory experience in a medium to large accounting department.  
  • Experience working in an Enterprise Resource Planning software.  
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities  

Preferred Qualifications 

  • CPA license or master’s degree in accounting  
  • Public accounting or auditing experience  
  • Knowledge and understanding of GAAP and GASB regulations  
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.  
  • Experience in higher education, non-profit or government setting.  
  • Previous experience as a General Ledger Accountant   
  • Strong supervisory and managerial skills  
  • Experience using Banner ERP system  

Major Responsibilities 

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of portions of the general ledger and payments to the College’s vendors.   
  • Review check runs for supporting documentation and reconcile to the general ledger.   
  • Supervise the General Ledger Accountant and AP Accountant and ensure compliance with recognized accounting standards, principles, and procedures by supervising and monitoring their work and ensuring their work is accurate and complete.  
  • Review the work of the General Ledger Accountant when it impacts how things post to the general ledger (setup of detail codes, orgs, funds, accounts).   
  • Contribute to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills for all support staff.  
  • Remain competent and current through self-directed professional reading, develop professional contacts with colleagues, attend professional development courses, and attend training and/or courses as directed by supervisors.   
  • Perform and oversee staff evaluations in accordance with State personnel rules.  
  • Assist with hiring and training staff.  
  • Assist with year-end close procedures and the annual financial statement audit as well as other audits that may need to be performed throughout the year.   
  • Constantly monitor and manage the College’s cash accounts, including cash held by the State of Colorado on behalf of the College.  
  • Reconcile the College’s operating and payroll bank accounts monthly.  
  • Reconcile the College’s Skycash monthly.  
  • Record monthly activity in the College’s investment account.  
  • Verify and close the College’s books monthly and feed the results to the State of Colorado’s CORE system.  
  • Prepare quarterly diagnostics for CORE.   
  • Create and review journal entries made in the CORE system as needed.  
  • Review the College’s accounting information to identify and resolve inaccuracies or imbalances  
  • Represent the College and the Accounting Office in a variety of meetings and committees.  
  • Complete journal entries as needed to record and/or allocate revenue, payments, and expenses as needed. Review journal entries prepared by other Accounting staff for accuracy.   
  • Safeguard institutional assets by monitoring and evaluating internal controls including system access.  
  • Assist the General Ledger Accountant with annual nonresident alien tax and Unrelated Business Income Tax filings.  
  • Maintain list of the College’s fixed assets and depreciation schedule.  
  • Prepare quarterly financial statements.   
  • Oversee process improvement and potential areas for change or gains in efficiency and effectiveness within the department by designing, implementing, and maintaining technical solutions to replace existing manual and/or inefficient processes.  
  • Maintain, review and revise policies, procedures, and guidelines as needed.  
  • Prepare reports and analysis for management as needed.  
  • Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities  
  • Maintains knowledge and awareness of digital accessibility including the American with Disabilities Act and Section 508.  
  • Produces and remediates digitally accessible materials in accordance with FLC standards.  
  • Contribute to the overall success of the Accounting Office by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Compensation  

The salary for this position is $65,000 plus a comprehensive benefits package.
