Laboratory Technologist

The Radiology Department is seeking a Laboratory Technologist.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Perform sample preparation, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) imaging, and data analysis in the Applied Imaging Mass Spectrometry (AIMS) Core at The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions.
  • The candidate will closely work with and support the users of the AIMS Core under the supervision of the AIMS Core director.
  • Section frozen or formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues obtained from users onto conductive slides, use a robotic sprayer to spray enzymes/matrix onto tissue sections, set up MALDI imaging experiments, perform histology stains, and perform imaging data analysis under guidance.
  • The candidate is expected to be knowledgeable about MALDI imaging analysis, SCiLS lab, iLAB, MATLAB, and statistical analysis methods.
  • Prepare reports about the obtained results in powerpoint and excel to be sent to users.
  • Frequently interact with AIMS Core users, requiring good people skills.
  • Keep the AIMS Core facility clean, monitor inventory levels, order materials and supplies as needed, and keep records of all experiments performed in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or related field required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Chemistry or related field preferred.
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
  • Preferred science courses with lab & research lab experience in analytical chemistry.
  • Mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), MALDI mass spectrometry or MALDI imaging experience strongly preferred.
  • Some related work experience preferred in a comparable lab performing MALDI mass spectrometry imaging, MALDI mass spectrometry, or other mass spectrometry imaging techniques, coupled with a general knowledge of biochemical/biological sciences or related field.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Good people skills and good communication skills required.
  • Exchanges information in an appropriate manner requiring good oral and written communication skills.
  • Background in analytical chemistry and mass spectrometry and HPLC.
  • Must be detail oriented, keep clear experimental records, have effective organizational skills, and be able to prioritize workload appropriately.
  • Must be able to perform multiple tasks efficiently and correctly, often operating more than one instrument at a time.
  • Experience in laboratory procedures and good computer skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs., must be able to sit for long period of time, and must be able to climb at least 4 flights of stairs.

Starting Salary Range: $14.14 - $19.44/hr (commensurate with experience)

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
