SEARCH DESCRIPTION:
The Assistant Director of Student Support & Transitions is responsible for assisting with all aspects of program operations for the Office of Graduate & International Student Life, as well as coordinating transition programs for new graduate and international students. The Assistant Director is responsible for the planning and implementation of all professional development, educational, and transition programs for the office. The Assistant Director will assist with assessment development and leading student focus groups with the goal of improving services and programs for our international and graduate students. The Assistant Director will oversee and supervise the Campus Connectors program in order to encourage engagement and foster a sense of belonging in the graduate and international student community. They will also implement the Student Affairs Competency Learning Experience (CLE) in all of their programs including the Pro Series workshops. By developing new programs and resources on campus, the Assistant Director will positively contribute to enhancing the experience and success of the graduate and international student communities. The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Graduate & International Student Life.
CORE DUTIES:
- Planning a variety of professional development programs and speaker series for graduate and international students offered both virtually and in-person.
- Assist with the planning and execution of new graduate student orientations in August & January as well as overseeing our International Student Welcome programming.
- Oversee the recruitment, selection, training and matching for our Campus Connectors program.
- Responsible for providing academic support for graduate and international students including performing degree audits, developing student success plans, assisting with the registration process and counseling students on developing degree completion plans.
- Plan and organize transition programs and workshops to prepare graduate and international students for their academic journey at the University of New Haven.
- Oversee the planning and execution of the annual Graduate Student Showcase, Pro Series Workshops, International Education Week, and the Cross-Disciplinary Case Competition.
- Collaborate with the Career Development Center staff to provide graduate and international students with professional development programs and workshops and, encourage student participation in professional associations specific to their degree program.
- Researches, recommends, develops and implements new initiatives that strengthen the graduate and international student experience.
- Assists with the on-boarding, training and supervision of the graduate student workers in the Office of Graduate & International Student Life.
- Oversight and development of parent and family programs for graduate and international students.
- Oversight of International Student Arrivals including setting up airport shuttles to campus, scheduling staff to welcome students at the airport, providing options for temporary housing, and coordinating residential student arrivals with the Office of Residential Life.
- Responsible for updating the off-campus living guide, the International Student Handbook, the Pre-Arrival guide, and the International student CANVAS course.
- Organize community living workshops and educate our international students on cultural norms and how to navigate the American education system.
- Assist with chaperoning events, programs and off-campus trips for the Office of Graduate & International Student Life and the Graduate Student Council as needed.
- Serve as the Chair of the Graduate Student Showcase & Case Competition committee and serve on other student affairs committees, including the CARE team.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
- Collaborates with colleagues on projects and initiatives as assigned.
- Assists with departmental assessment efforts.
- Evening and weekend work required.
- Attend meetings and events in the absence of the Director of Graduate & International Student Life.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
- Master’s Degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education or related field.
- Minimum of 2-4 years progressive experience in student affairs with at least 1-3 years of experience developing and implementing student programs, providing students services and building a strong student community.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Proficient with all Microsoft Office Programs especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher.
- Previous experience working with graduate and international students is preferred.
- Knowledge of higher education principles, practices and procedures.
- Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff and alumni.
- Previous experience with student assessment and data collection.
- Ability to role model behavior that positively contributes to an inclusive work and learning environment.
