The School of Theatre and Music at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) seeks a distinguished artist and/or scholar with strong leadership skills for the position of Head of Music beginning August 2022.

The Head will work with the faculty and administration to realize the mission of the School of Theatre and Music, support and build music degree programs, and enhance the visibility of the Department of Music. In addition to overseeing management of the department in consultation with the Director of the School (degree programs, course timetables, budgets, etc.), the Head will maintain an active research and/or performance profile and will teach a reduced load in their area of expertise.  

Minimum qualifications include a terminal degree (DMA, PhD) or equivalent record of professional accomplishments; significant scholarly and/or artistic distinction and recognition within candidate’s area of specialty; an established record of excellence in undergraduate teaching; substantial academic administrative experience; proven success thinking strategically and working collaboratively to build academic programs; a demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in curriculum, the classroom, and the field; and a high level of interpersonal skills and professionalism. Desirable areas of specialization include, but are not limited to: music education, performance, conducting, musicology, and ethnomusicology. Preferred qualifications include leadership experience with facility renovation and arts building projects, as well as music education licensure.

This position will be a full-time nine-month appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with tenure. Interviews are expected to take place mid to late January 2022. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Course work is offered leading to a BA in Music, a BA in Music Business, a BM in Music Performance, a BM in Jazz Studies, a BFA in Acting, a BA in Acting, and a BA in Theatre Design, Production and Technology. Music ensembles include three choirs, concert bands, jazz ensembles, orchestra, athletic band, chamber groups, jazz combos, among others. The faculty consists of performing artists and scholars.
