Job Description

The HR Business Partner contributes at both hands-on and strategic levels to attract, recruit, and retain diverse and excellent faculty and staff. Through the use of strong client relationships and detailed HR knowledge, the HR Business Partner supports employees, supervisors, and managers to proactively lead their teams in ways that improve performance, drive high retention, and ensure high levels of engagement across the teams they serve. The position provides operational and strategic guidance and consultation in any, some, or all of the following: talent management, classification, compensation, organizational analysis, training and development, interpretation and application of laws, rules, policies, or other functions relating to human resources management. The position may assist in program and policy development.

The position performs advanced, professional-level, human resources work in support of assigned area(s); plans and carries out work independently, utilizing knowledge of laws, policies, and regulations; integrates and partners with HR colleagues; resolves complex human resources issues; prioritizes and manages issues within designated area of responsibility; and maintains and ensures a confidential environment at all times.

35% - Provide oversight, direction, and support on a multitude of talent management activities to support NAU’s efforts in hiring excellent and diverse talent in designated area(s). Collaborate with department managers and supervisors to develop effective recruitment and hiring strategies. Review job duties, qualifications and knowledge, skills, and abilities to create appropriate recruitment tools. Analyzes data and statistics for trends and patterns with attention to recruitment, hiring practices, motivation, turnover, and compliance with employment laws and regulations. Monitor and ensure compliance with university, state, and federal regulations. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external constituents. Provide training to employees and supervisors on hiring processes, procedures, and legal requirements. Assist in the collection, verification, analysis, and reporting of human resource information.

35% - Provide oversight, direction, and support of classification and compensation activities in designated area(s). Audit new, vacant, and occupied staff positions. Conduct comprehensive review of position's responsibilities which may include interviewing incumbents, supervisors and employing officials, examining work site, work methods, etc. Interpret and allocate positions to appropriate classification system applying appropriate definitions and university’s classification and compensation system. Explain audit results to employee, supervisor and employing official. Prepare notification to employee of audit finding. Provide systematic review of organizational structure, salaries, and workforce to guide in the development of recommendations and action plans to support organizational objectives. Interpret rules, FLSA and other statutes that may impact the college. Provide training to managers and supervisors on classification and compensation system and processes. Assists departments in applicable laws, policies, and procedures.

10% - Provide interpretation, information, and advice regarding university policies and procedures, ABOR, Arizona Revised Code, FLSA, and other rules and regulations that may impact the university. Apply institutional standards, policies, and guidelines. Ensures adherence with internal controls and external requirements. Work with AVP-HR on potentially legal issues.

10% - Provide leadership, direction, coordination, support, and training for classified staff members. Supervisory duties include task assignments, workload management, resolving daily operational programs, training, evaluating, and correcting performances, resolving conflict, authorizing leave, and building a productive work environment. Establish performance standards, assess performance, counsel, and evaluate assigned personnel performance.

5% - Review business processes, systems, or other changes that might impact existing workflows and recommends methods to optimize to desired state and improve efficiency. Participate in cross-functional teams to resolve complex issues related to workflows or other complex processes and/or lead discussions with the business and operational leaders to analyze needs. Implement processes and practices that can adapt quickly to changing organization, business, and demands.

5% - Complete special assignments and projects as required. Develop and provide formal training in areas of expertise. Maintain knowledge on current developments and practices in human resources. Provide backup to HR staff as needed. Perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources OR related field. Any combination of relevant education and professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • 2 years or more Human Resource experience.
  • 1 year or more management or supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in HR or related field.
  • Human Resource experience in a higher education setting.
  • SHRM (SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP) or HRCI (PHR or SPHR).
  • Demonstrate ability to be a team member
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience interpreting and applying laws, rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with large groups and individuals at all work levels.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computers and software applications.
  • Demonstrated success in fostering internal and external community relationships.
  • Commitment to diversity and the ability to work effectively in a diverse workplace and educational environment.
  • Flexibility of schedule and willingness to work outside of regular hours when needed.
