The Political Science department is a mid-size, undergraduate-teaching department in the school of Arts and Sciences, and is one of the most active and visible in the University. The department has about 100 majors, and is composed of eight full-time faculty, and several adjuncts. Key departmental programs include the Political Science major, Adolescence Education with a concentration in political science, a concentration in Law and Justice, and a B.S. degree in Public Administration and Policy.

SUNY Cortland has a strong commitment to the affirmation of diversity and offers courses addressing inclusion studies and global diversity, as well as interdisciplinary programs in Africana Studies, Latinx and Latin American Studies, Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies and Native American Studies. Major Responsibilities
Contribute to a culture of inclusivity and diversity through teaching, scholarship and service.

Teach courses relevant to areas of specialization. Typical load is three courses per semester.
  • Teach introductory courses, which may include Introduction to World Politics, and upper division courses in the undergraduate curriculum. May also teach a basic methods course. Other courses/subject areas may become available within the department.;
  • Prepare and deliver course content in comparative politics with a regional specialization in Asia or Latin America. Specialty may include, but need not be limited to, terrorism, revolutions, international politics, international economic relations or international conflict. Expertise in international relations also highly desirable;
  • Demonstrate a passion for teaching and mentoring undergraduate students of all skill and ability levels, academic backgrounds, social and cultural identities with diverse lived experiences;
  • Provide scheduled office hours and support students outside of the classroom;

Demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and research, with a willingness to collaborate with other colleagues on campus in a variety of international experiential activities (e.g. study abroad, internships, civic engagement, Model UN);
  • Develop and maintain an active scholarship or research agenda that leads to publications and presentations; seek external funding to support research agenda;

Engage in service to the department, school, university, local community and/or professional.
  • Contribute to continued development of program curricula within the department. through active participation in review and assessment activities;
  • Collaborate with colleagues across departments, work in teams, and lead through influence.
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills including collegiality in interactions within and outside of the campus community; treat others at all levels with fairness and respect;
  • Demonstrate commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and social justice and support an equitable and diverse scholarly environment ;
  • Promote an environment of inclusive excellence and demonstrate commitment to improving access to higher education for all students regardless of background;
  • Commitment to support the SUNY Cortland mission, vision, values and priorities including educating students to become global citizens.

  • PhD in Political Science by start date (or ABD status in Political Science with a scheduled completion date)
  • Focus on comparative politics with a regional specialization in Asia or Latin America
  • An active research agenda
Preferred Qualifications
  • Background in international relations
  • Academic service experience
