Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities
The Assistant Director will be a key member of the Student Accessibility and Educational Opportunity ( SAEO ) leadership team. This individual will help oversee and provide essential services related to technology, access, captioning and interpretive services, and assessment for VCU’s population of students with disabilities. They will also collaborate with campus partners (IT, academic departments) and contracted vendors to meet the needs of our student population. This position will primarily be responsible for overseeing several key aspects of SAEO operations.

Assistive Technology Initiatives
  • Hold individual support meetings with students registered with SAEO to determine appropriate AT supports.
  • Conduct outreach and provide ongoing support to students to throughout the semester, as needed.
  • Work with campus partners to ensure that students with disabilities have the ability to access VCU learning management systems, computer systems, and other technology.




Alternative Format Materials and related technology
  • Hold individual support meetings for students registered with SAEO to determine specific needs for alternatively formatted materials.
  • Procure copies of print materials in alternate formats, when appropriate.
  • Convert print materials to appropriate digital formats, as needed. Modify print or digital materials to meet a student’s needs.


Captioning and Interpretive Services ( ASL, CART, captioning solutions for learning management systems)
  • Oversee the provision of all captioning and interpretive services for students on the Monroe Park Campus.
  • Work with university faculty, staff, and academic departments, to arrange accessibility measures for academic and non-academic activities.
  • Provide education to campus partners on arranging services in a digital environment


Testing Access Center
  • Provide direct supervision for SAEO’s Testing Accommodation Coordinator
  • Assist with complex testing-related concerns and accommodations
  • Serve as an advocate and liaison between SAEO, students and faculty on testing-related matters
Minimum Hiring Standards
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education in a field such as psychology, counseling, special education, vocational rehabilitation etc.
  • 2+ years direct experience working with students with physical, sensory, learning, psychological and/or other disabilities in an educational setting.
  • Extensive knowledge of computer operations and applications and ways that standard applications can be accessed by persons with a variety of disabilities.
  • Substantial knowledge of legislation pertaining to post-secondary education and students with disabilities.
  • Specifically, the candidate will need to have knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Sections 504 and Section 508 of the Rehab. Act.
  • Experience and knowledge in identifying potential ways to improve access to educational materials, services and programs using assistive technology.
  • Experience providing academic support and/or learning interventions for students with cognitive and psychological disabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide supervision and training for entry-level to mid-career staff and/or student workers.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU .
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
Preferred Hiring Standards
  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education in a field such as psychology, counseling, special education, vocational rehabilitation etc.
  • 4+ years direct experience working with students with physical, sensory, learning, psychological and/or other
    disabilities in a higher education setting.
