Compensation and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Salary: $4,304 per month

Full classification Salary Range:$ 4,304 - $6,120 per month

  • This is a full-time, probationary, exempt position.


The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 14 paid holidays a year. Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Vice President for Academic Advising and Student Success, and within Student Success Services (SSS), the Academic Counselor shall provide high quality, accurate, personalized academic advising and support to undergraduate students and assist them through degree progress and/or major exploration concerns at California State University Fresno. The incumbent collaborates as an advising team member in the University Advising Center (UAC) to support and participate in all advising and student support activities and efforts.

Key Qualifications

  • Computer office systems and ability to use a broad range of technology, applications and software packages.
  • Working knowledge (or ability to quickly acquire it) of the following:
    • Basic helping, interview, and counseling skills and techniques
    • Fresno State policies, procedures, and academic requirements
    • Practices, procedures, and activities of advising at an institution of higher education
    • Operations, functions, and programs of the campus, division, and office to which assigned
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters
  • Excellent presentation and customer service skills

Education and Experience

  • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.
  • Equivalent to two years of full-time academic advising experience or related field.
  • A Master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience

The mission of the University Advising Center is to empower undergraduate students by helping them take responsibility for achieving their academic and personal goals, with a particular focus on the undeclared /undecided student, and to support the university advising community.
