JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Dean of Physical Science, Math and Engineering, and in close coordination with the faculty and staff of the chemistry department, the staff member will assist in preparing all laboratories for the instructional program. Preparation will include: 1) purchasing chemicals and supplies as needed; 2) preparation of solutions according to specifications; and 3) distribution of chemicals for student use. All preparation is to be completed in a timely manner according to instructional schedules and under the direction of faculty. In addition, the staff member will maintain complete, up-to-date records relating to: 1) notes regarding preparation of chemicals or solutions for each instructional class; 2) purchase orders, receipts, warranties, and equipment maintenance procedures; 3) computerized inventory of all supplies, equipment, chemicals, and Safety Data Sheets; 4) student lockers and student equipment checkout; and 5) time sheets for student stockroom support. Additional duties include overseeing student assistants, processing purchase orders in accordance with departmental budget, overseeing and/or performing maintenance of equipment and instrumentation, and arranging repairs as needed. More generally, the staff member will oversee stockroom planning and space utilization and develop written guidelines for stockroom procedures such as student check-in, locker distribution, and student check-in/out of special equipment. Finally, the staff member will provide guidance to the chemistry department in the management of hazardous waste, ensure compliance with local, state and federal (OSHA) safety regulations for laboratory and stockroom, and perform related duties as assigned.
DEFINITION
Under general supervision, provides instructional support services for faculty and students; prepares and sets up exercises, demonstrations, instructional materials, and supplies; assists students and faculty in the use and operation of equipment and materials related to the College's chemistry program; and performs related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from assigned Dean. Exercises no supervision of staff.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is a journey-level class responsible for conducting a variety of instructional support activities to ensure student learning. Positions perform the full range of duties assigned, working independently, and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This classification is distinguished from other laboratory technicians by having subject matter expertise in chemistry.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess mobility to work in a laboratory environment, to use a computer, and to operate varied equipment and instruments related to chemistry programs; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned equipment and instruments. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 10 pounds with the use of proper equipment. ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
Employees primarily work in a laboratory environment that may contain various equipment and instruments, with moderate to high noise levels and controlled to varied temperature conditions. Employees are exposed to chemical and hazardous substances and mechanical and/or electrical equipment and instruments.
