Department Summary

Digital Transformation is a department within Institutional Intelligence, Information Technology Services Division. Utilizing the tools of web and mobile technologies, including AI and machine learning, Digital Transformation strives to create a culture of easily accessible, intelligently designed, and seamless systems to improve the human experience at CSUSB by making interactions available from anywhere. We seek to improve university processes, eliminate administrative bottlenecks, reduce technology barriers, and increase operational efficiency by creating intuitive, agile, and efficient tools to accelerate graduation, increase retention, and support the success of our students, faculty, and staff.

Job Summary

Under the immediate supervision of the Director of Digital Transformation in the Division of Information Technology Services, the User Experience Developer (UX Developer) will plan, design, and develop web & mobile applications using code and visual design tools, analyzing user interfaces to integrate user-friendly features into every design.

The UX Developer will create wireframes, storyboards, user flows, process flows and sitemaps to effectively communicate interaction and design ideas. Meet with clients to determine application needs, especially regarding user interface and experience. Present designs and key milestone deliverables to peers, clients, and executive level stakeholders. Conceptualize original ideas that bring simplicity and user-friendliness to complex design roadblocks. Execute all visual design stages from concept to final hand-off to programmers, including building front-end assets (HTML/CSS/JS). Collaborate with the rest of the development team to design various web applications and programs.

The UX Developer will perform usability tests and analyze the results to gauge the user experience with web & mobile applications. Evaluate user interfaces of existing web & mobile applications to identify areas needing improvement.

The UX Developer will promote design guidelines, best practices and standards across multiple platforms. Provide department, division and campus with design consultation based on CSUSB standards. Work cooperatively with the Office of Strategic Communication to achieve objectives and adhere to university branding guidelines.

Develop styling for web applications, campus map, mobile app (Drupal, Concept3D and ModoLabs) and any other associated systems. Create custom themes, and/or extend existing themes for Drupal, Wordpress, and any necessary third-party systems.

The functions include but are not limited to:

  • Excellent understanding of image authoring tools such as Illustrator or Photoshop
  • Excellent understanding of web markup, including HTML5, CSS3
  • Good understanding of advanced JavaScript libraries and frameworks, such as NodeJS & jQuery
  • Proficient understanding of cross-browser compatibility issues
  • Proficient understanding of code versioning tools, such as Git
  • Proficient understanding of server-side CSS pre-processing platforms, such as LESS and SASS
  • Proficient understanding in the creation of Drupal and Wordpress themes, modules, & plugins


Employment Status: Full-time, Exempt, Temporary with the possibility of converting to permanent.

Key Qualifications

To enter this classification, a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in technical information systems and application program packages is a prerequisite. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study. Foundation knowledge and skills for the Information Technology Consultant, depending on the nature of the position assignment, may include working knowledge of common software application packages, equipment platforms, reference database systems and sources, and training methods and a basic understanding of networks, data communication, and multimedia systems.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent related experience) in Computer Science, UX Development, Design, or related field.

  • Preferred Qualifications
  • 5 years experience in web development or equivalent field.
  • 3 years experience supervising in IT.
  • Proficient understanding in the creation of Drupal and Wordpress themes.

    Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,372 - $4,635 per month

    Classification Salary Range: $4,372 - $10,792 per month
