JOB SUMMARY

California State University, San Bernardino invites application for Department Chair position in the Department of Nursing for the start of the academic year, 2022-2023. The DON is seeking visionary candidates who can provide academic, nursing, and administrative leadership to achieve the mission and goals of the Department, College and University in a multicultural community. Preferred candidates will be expected to meet the traditional requirements of excellence in teaching, research and creative activity, and service to the university, profession of nursing, and the community. The goals and challenges for the new Department Chair include leading and strengthening a diverse faculty and student body representing baccalaureate and graduate programs in nursing across two campuses in meeting CCNE accreditation standards and California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) regulations and approvals as well as enhancement of scholarship and development of sufficient external financial support and community involvement. CCNE requires the Nursing Department Chair to be a Registered Nurse, hold a doctoral degree and a graduate degree in nursing, and be vested with the administrative authority to administer the Mission, Vision, and Values of CSUSB and the Department of Nursing.

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES:

Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population and to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students across a wide range of disciplines. The successful candidate will:
  • coordinate and ensure that standards for national accreditation and State approvals of programs are in compliance
  • lead academic strategic program planning and curriculum development to meet community needs
  • planning, developing, and oversight of program assessment and improvement efforts focusing on teaching and learning excellence
  • develop curriculum that includes innovative instruction and technology
  • recruiting, performance evaluation, and professional development of faculty and staff
  • provide administrative oversight of retention, tenure, and promotion including faculty mentoring
  • effectively communicate and resolve/address students and faculty concerns
  • manage departmental resources including the allocated budget
  • manage and oversee faculty workload/assignments
  • secure and oversee grant funding and other financial resources to fund faculty and program initiatives
  • preside over Department of Nursing (DON) faculty meetings and serve on college/university councils and committees
  • establish collaborative partnerships with community organizations
  • advocate for the mission of the DON to stakeholders within and outside the university and to professional and academic groups at local, regional, state, national, and international levels
  • promote and engage in activities that support diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus, in local and global communities, and the profession
  • actively participate in professional organizations governing nursing education.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • An earned Doctorate in Nursing or related field from a regionally accredited institution. A Master's degree with a major in Nursing is required if the doctorate is not in nursing.
  • RN licensure within the United States and eligibility for RN licensure in the State of California. RN licensure in California is expected within six months of hire.
  • Sufficient qualifications and experience to warrant appointment at the rank of Associate or full Professor with tenure.
  • History of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and professional service and the ability to promote the same in others.
  • Candidates will have 5 to 7 years progressively more responsible faculty and administrative experience in baccalaureate or higher nursing education.
  • Candidates will have demonstrated experience in CCNE accreditation and program development and maintenance.
  • Candidates will have exceptional leadership experience in multi-departmental settings with demonstrated experience in communication, management, productive teamwork, and complex organizational dynamics.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • A PhD in Nursing is preferred.
  • Preferred candidates will have an established reputation as leader in nursing and higher education with prior experience as a Nursing Chair or Dean.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in developing a DNP program with a Nurse Practitioner focus.
  • Experience in the administration of nursing programs in accordance with the State of California BRN regulations and approvals and/or the CSU System.
  • Evidence of experience with strategic and financial planning.
  • Experience with grant preparation and distance education.
  • A strong command of macro level changes in the health care landscape including but not limited to technology, information science, and innovation.

The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Nursing (DON) at California State University San Bernardino is committed to continuing to build a diverse faculty, staff, and student body as it responds to the changing population and educational needs of California and the nation. The DON offers courses which are predominantly face-to-face for pre-licensure BSN, registered nurse, and graduate students. DON has an enrollment of approximately 400 undergraduate and 30 graduate students. The DON degree programs are BSN (prelicensure and RN to BSN) and MSN with specialty options as Nurse Educator, Population Health for Clinical Nurse Leaders, and Advanced Community/Public Health Nursing. The school is in the process of planning for a Doctor of Nursing Practice Program with a Nurse Practitioner focus to meet the healthcare needs of the communities served.
