The National Museum of Dentistry of the University of Maryland School of Dentistry is seeking applications for a full-time Museum Educator and Researcher. The National Museum of Dentistry is a Smithsonian Institution Affiliate and is renowned for its collection of dental treasures. The museum opened in1996 and was declared the official museum of the dental profession by the United States Congress in 2003. Our 7,000+ square feet of exhibition space offer visitors an extraordinary array of historic artifacts and interactive exhibitions that celebrate the history of dentistry and inspire people to make healthy choices about oral health. The Museum’s 40,000 object collection of dental instruments, furniture, and artwork is one of the most important and oldest in the world. A substantial portion of the core collection traces its roots to the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, the world’s first college of dentistry, founded in 1840.

Qualifications :

The candidate must have museum business, public programing and special events experience and should have excellent written and verbal communication skills, a thorough knowledge of education and outreach methods, an ability to successfully lead a school tour program and assist with volunteer recruitment and training of docents and interns. The candidate should also have experience or interest in conducting museum related scholarly work consistent with industry standards for publication in museum related journals or other relevant publications. Responsibilities will include the management, scheduling and conducting school tour programs through the development of promotional materials, lesson plans and educational goals and objectives. The candidate will interface with state, city and county school personnel to promote participation, enhance coordination and to ensure that the museum tour experience is curriculum-based. The candidate must also have computer hardware, software and programming knowledge to support museum exhibit and internet-based activities. The candidate should also have demonstrated success with grant writing and submission to support the museum’s research and educational objectives. The candidate should also have school tour program and sufficient operational acumen in other museum activities to include managing and updating memberships. The candidate should have a master’s degree in a museum-studies related field. In addition to a master’s degree in a museum-studies related field, a master’s degree in business is also desirable.
